Alexandru Crișan
Alexandru Crișan is a Romanian former chess player. Career He was awarded the International Master title in 1991, and the Grandmaster title in 1993. Controversy Suspicions of Crișan's achievements being illegitimate arose when it was found that he had a rating of 2635 without playing any notable games against the top 10 Romanian players, participating in the top group of the Romanian National Championship, participating in any Chess Olympiads, or having any results from official tournaments. Zurab Azmaiparashvili (who was himself later found to have rigged tournament results in his favor) examined some of Crișan's games, and claimed that his rating was impossible given his manner of play. It was found that Crișan had faked tournament reports to gain the Grandmaster title. In September 2001, FIDE Congress recommended for his titles to be revoked, though this was not immediately done. Șimleu Silvaniei (; , ) is a town in Sălaj County, Crișana, Romania with a population of 13,948 people (2021 census). It is located near the ancient Dacian fortress Dacidava. Three villages are administered by the town: Bic (''Bükk''), Cehei (''Somlyócsehi''), and Pusta (''Csehipuszta''). International Master
FIDE titles are awarded by the international chess governing body FIDE (''Fédération Internationale des Échecs'') for outstanding performance. The highest such title is Grandmaster (GM). Titles generally require a combination of Elo rating and norms (performance benchmarks in competitions including other titled players). Grandmaster (GM) is a Chess title, title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Chess Championship, World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Zurab Azmaiparashvili
Zurab Azmaiparashvili ( ka, ზურაბ აზმაიფარაშვილი; born 16 March 1960) is a chess grandmaster from Georgia. His peak Elo rating was 2702, achieved in July 2003. He is currently, as of 2024, the president of the European Chess Union. Career Azmaiparashvili became a Grandmaster in 1988. Among his achievements are a 2810 performance rating at the 1998 Chess Olympiad and first-place finishes at Pavlodar 1982, Moscow 1986, Albena 1986, Tbilisi 1986, London (Lloyds Bank Open) 1989, and in the 2003 European Individual Chess Championship in Silivri. Gaioz Nigalidze
Gaioz Nigalidze ( ka, გაიოზ ნიგალიძე; born 24 April 1989) is a Georgian chess player. He was awarded the title International Master by FIDE in 2009. In 2014, he was also awarded the title Grandmaster, but it was revoked in 2015 for cheating using electronic devices that were hidden in a bathroom. Career Nigalidze won the Georgian Chess Championship in 2013 and 2014. Igors Rausis
Isa Kasimi (April 7, 1961 – March 28, 2024), born Igor Kondylev and known as Igors Rausis until 2020, was a Latvian chess International Master. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 1992, but the title was stripped away after he was caught cheating in 2019. He won the Latvian Chess Championship in 1995. He represented Bangladesh from 2003 to 2007, when he switched to the Czech Republic. In July 2019, Kasimi was caught cheating in a Strasbourg tournament, after which he admitted to the transgression and announced his immediate retirement from chess. The Czech Chess Federation subsequently cancelled his membership, and the FIDE Ethics Commission stripped him of his Grandmaster title and gave him a six-year ban.
