Alexandru Ciura
Alexandru Ciura (15 November 1876 – 2 March 1936) was an Austro-Hungarian-born Romanian journalist, short story writer and priest. Born in Abrud, Ciura was descended from a long line of Greek-Catholic priests in the Țara Moților region of Transylvania; family members had fought in the 1848 revolution alongside Avram Iancu. After attending high school at Blaj and Sibiu, graduating in 1894, Ciura studied theology and philology at Budapest University from 1894 to 1902. He earned his degree in 1903 with a thesis on Mihai Eminescu and George Coșbuc. Ciura made his published debut with a serial that appeared in the Sibiu newspaper '' Tribuna'' in 1895. His first book, the 1903 ''Visuri trecute'', featured sketches and ephemera. He was the first editor-in-chief of the Budapest-based '' Luceafărul'' (1902-1903), contributing assiduously until its suppression in 1914. Unirea (newspaper)
''Unirea'' ("The Union") was a newspaper published at Blaj, in the Transylvania region, which was administered by the Kingdom of Hungary and eventually became part of Romania in 1920. Appearing between January 3, 1891 and March 24, 1945, it was an official publication of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church. The newspaper's initial editor was Bishop Vasile Hossu. Taking a stance against '' Junimea'' and its magazine ''Convorbiri Literare'' in the months following its January 1891 establishment, ''Unirea'' featured a series of critical articles about Mihai Eminescu, authored by the priest Alexandru Grama. The newspaper published poems, including by Ion Agârbiceanu, who made his debut there with ''Amintiri'' in 1899. Elena din Ardeal and Ion Pop-Reteganul numbered among its prose fiction contributors. Ion Agârbiceanu
Ion Agârbiceanu (first name also Ioan, last name also Agărbiceanu and Agîrbiceanu; September 12, 1882 – May 28, 1963) was an Austro-Hungarian-born Romanian writer, journalist, politician, theologian and Greek-Catholic priest. Born among the Romanian peasant class of Transylvania, he was originally an Orthodox, but chose to embrace Eastern Catholicism. Assisted by the Catholic congregation of Blaj, he graduated from Budapest University, after which he was ordained. Agârbiceanu was initially assigned to a parish in the Apuseni Mountains, which form the backdrop to much of his fiction. Before 1910, Agârbiceanu had achieved literary fame in both Transylvania and the Kingdom of Romania, affiliating with Astra cultural society in 1912; his work was disputed between the rival schools of ''Sămănătorul'' and Poporanism. Apuseni Mountains
The Apuseni Mountains ( ro, Munții Apuseni, hu, Erdélyi-középhegység) is a mountain range in Transylvania, Romania, which belongs to the Western Romanian Carpathians, also called ''Occidentali'' in Romanian. Their name translates from Romanian as Mountains "of the sunset", i.e., "western". The highest peak is the Bihor Peak at . The Apuseni Mountains have about 400 caves. The Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People ( ro, Asociația Transilvană pentru Literatura Română și Cultura Poporului Român, ASTRA) is a cultural association founded in 1861 in Sibiu (Hermannstadt). It had an important role in the cultural life and the movement of national awakening for the Romanians in Transylvania. Its first president was the ethnic Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan of Sibiu — Andrei Şaguna. Its vicepresident was the Greek-Catholic priest Timotei Cipariu, and George Bariţiu was secretary. Shortly after its founding, the association established a boarding school, museum, and large library in its provenance of Sibiu, and later developed a network of ASTRA libraries in Transylvanian towns.
