Alexandre Raymond
Alexandre Marc Raymond (22 January 1872 – 16 May 1941) was a French Orientalism, Orientalist architect and artist. After working in Islamic art, he turned to Byzantine art. During the last twenty years of his life he undertook substantial work, in particular on Hagia Sophia. Biography Early life Alexandre Marc Raymond was born on 22 January 1872 in Constantinople, in Turkey, then part of the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman Empire. He was the son of Marc Raymond, architect, born in Constantinople in 1846, and Rose Valsamaki, Greek Orthodox, born in Cephalonia. In 1894, he began studying at Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (School of Fine Arts) in Constantinople where he was a student of Alexander Vallaury. Constantinople
Constantinople (#Names of Constantinople, see other names) was a historical city located on the Bosporus that served as the capital of the Roman Empire, Roman, Byzantine Empire, Byzantine, Latin Empire, Latin, and Ottoman Empire, Ottoman empires between its consecration in 330 until 1930, when it was renamed to Istanbul.
