Alexander Productions
William D. Alexander (1916 – November 19, 1991) was an American filmmaker. He made U.S. government-sponsored newsreels for African American audiences. He later established his own production company, Alexander Productions, in New York City and became a film producer. He made the short documentary film ''Village of Hope'' about a leper colony in Liberia. He also made the films ''Portrait of Ethiopia'' ''Wealth of Wood'', which received the United Nations Award at the Madrid International Film Festival in Madrid in 1967. Biography Alexander was born in 1916 in Denver, Colorado, or in Missouri. He grew up in Colorado and was educated at Colorado State College of Education, now the University of Northern Colorado, and Chicago State University. Anna Mae Winburn
Anna Mae Winburn ''(née'' Darden; August 13, 1913 – September 30, 1999) was an American vocalist and jazz bandleader who flourished beginning in the mid-1930s. An African-American, she is best known for having directed the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, an all-female big band that was perhaps one of the few – and one of the most – racially integrated dance-bands of the swing era. In 1944, the band was named as the country's favorite all-female orchestra in a ''DownBeat'' magazine poll. Early life Anna Mae Darden was born in Port Royal, Tennessee, to Andrew Jackson Darden (1881–1956) and Lula Carnell ''(maiden;'' 1882–1929), a musical family. The United States Office of War Information (OWI) was a United States government agency created during World War II. The OWI operated from June 1942 until September 1945. Joseph Louis Barrow (May 13, 1914 – April 12, 1981) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1934 to 1951. "Open the Door, Richard" is a song first recorded by the saxophonist Jack McVea for Black & White Records at the suggestion of A&R man Ralph Bass. In 1947, it was the number one song on ''Billboard'''s "Honor Roll of Hits" and became a runaway pop sensation. Origin "Open the Door, Richard" began as a black vaudeville routine. Pigmeat Markham, one of several who performed the routine, attributed it to his mentor Bob Russell. According to Markham, Russell wrote the piece for a show called ''Mr. Rareback'', in which the comedian John Mason performed it (and presumably expanded it in improvisation).
