Alexander Vladimirovich Politkovsky (; born 15 September 1953) is a Russian journalist, political commentator, and a professor at the Moscow Institute of Television and Radio Broadcasting. From 1987 to 1991 he was a special correspondent and presenter of an infotainment program '' Vzglyad''. Politkovsky was one of the founders of the TV company VID. He was elected as a Deputy of the Russian Federation for the period of 1990 to 1993. Assassination Of Anna Politkovskaya
On 7 October 2006, Russian journalist, writer and human rights in Russia, human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead in the elevator of her apartment block in central Moscow. She was known for her opposition to the Second Chechen War and criticism of Russian president Vladimir Putin. The recipient of several international awards for her work, she authored ''Putin's Russia'' as well as several books about the Chechen conflict. Her assassination, which occurred on Vladimir Putin's birthday, sparked a Reactions to the assassination of Anna Politkovskaya, strong international reaction. Three Chechens were arrested for the murder, but were acquitted. The verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court of Russia and new trials were held.
