Alexander Miles (surgeon)
Alexander Miles MD, LL.D, FRCSEd (21 May 1865 – 9 April 1953) was a Scottish surgeon who worked at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He was known for the quality of his surgical teaching, for his role as a medical journal editor and as the author of popular surgical textbooks and books on surgical history. He was elected List of Presidents of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Early life Alexander Miles was born at Leith, Scotland on 21 May 1865, the son of James Miles and his wife Marion (née Kinghorn). He was educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh and at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, University of Edinburgh, where he graduated Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, MB, CM in 1888. David Wilkie (surgeon)
Sir David Percival Dalbreck Wilkie, (5 November 1882 – 28 August 1938), known to friends and colleagues as DPD, was among the first of the new breed of professors of surgery appointed at a relatively young age to develop surgical research and undergraduate teaching. At the University of Edinburgh, he established a surgical research laboratory from which was to emerge a cohort of young surgical researchers destined to become the largest dynasty of surgical professors yet seen in the British Isles. He is widely regarded as the father of British academic surgery.
