Alexander Black (surveyor)
Alexander Black (25 May 1827 – 13 March 1897) was a Scottish-born surveyor who worked for most of career in Victoria, Australia and was Surveyor General of Victoria for six years from 1886. Black was born at Arndilly, Banffshire, Scotland. After training as a land surveyor in Aberdeen and working locally, he migrated to Victoria in 1852. He worked in the Castlemaine goldfields then returned to Melbourne and joined the Victorian government survey office. His work included the survey of the Black-Allan Line—the eastern "straight-edge" portion of the border between the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria. Black was appointed Surveyor General of Victoria on 1 July 1886 and held the position until his retirement in May 1892. He was elected a member of the Victorian Institute of Surveyors in 1877 and was president 1879 to 1880. Michael Callanan (surveyor)
Michael Callanan (March 29, 1849 – February 21, 1929) was an Irish-born physician and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Cariboo from 1909 until his retirement at the 1916 election in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a Conservative. He was born in 1849 in Clonakilty, County Cork, the son of Daniel J. Callanan, and was educated at Trinity College Dublin and in Paris. From 1875 to 1873, he practised in Kilbrittain and Rosscarbery. He came to Canada, settling in the Northwest Territories. Later, Callanan practised in Nanaimo and Victoria for eight years before moving to Quesnel in 1894 and Barkerville in 1899. Callanan was a physician for the Royal Cariboo Hospital in Barkerville. In 1885, he married Hannah Healy. Alexander John Skene
__NOTOC__ Alexander John Skene (1820 – 22 August 1894) was Surveyor General of Victoria, (then a colony, now a state of Australia) from 1869 to 1886. Early life Skene was born Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of Alexander John Skene, an army major, and his wife Catherine Margaret, ''née'' Auldjowas. Skene junior was educated at the University of Aberdeen and practised in surveying. Career in Australia Skene arrived in Melbourne in 1839, became official surveyor to the Grant district council in 1843 and a government district surveyor in October 1848. Skene showed the theodolite to be a more accurate and reliable than the compass technique previously used. In 1853 Skene was placed in charge of the District Survey Office at Geelong and in 1854 was appointed Surveyor of the colony under patent. Banffshire
Banffshire ; sco, Coontie o Banffshire; gd, Siorrachd Bhanbh) is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area of Scotland. The county town is Banff, although the largest settlement is Buckie to the west. It borders the Moray Firth to the north, Morayshire and Inverness-shire to the west, and Aberdeenshire to the east and south. Local government council Between 1890 and 1975 the County of Banff, also known as Banffshire, had its own county council. Banffshire County Council was based at the Sheriff Court and County Hall.
