Alex Rima
Jean Alex Rima, more commonly known as Alex Rima (born 29 August 1929) is a Mauritian politician. Political career Alex Rima was a trade unionist who founded the ''Organisation de l’Unité des Artisans''(OUA) to fight for the rights of manual workers. One of his recruits was Rajpalsingh Allgoo who became OUA's negotiator, and later became an influential figure in industrial relations. In 1965 Alex Rima was elected as Lord Mayor of Port Louis, replacing A. Monaf Fakira. During Rima's 1-year term A. R. Abdool Carrim was the Deputy Lord Mayor. In 1966 Rima was replaced by D. Moorghen and Carrim was replaced by Norbert Poupard. At the 1967 general elections Alex Rima was a candidate of the ''Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate''( PMSD) in Constituency No. 4 - Port Louis North and Montagne Longue but he was defeated by pro-Independence IFB-CAM-Labour coalition candidates Foogooa, Bundhun and Rault. The Mauritian Social Democratic Party (PMSD, ), also known as the Mauritian Conservative Party, is a political party in Mauritius. Conservative and Francophilic, the PMSD is the fourth biggest political party in the National Assembly and currently forms part of the opposition. History The origins of the PMSD date back to the conservative ''Parti de L'Ordre''. Several decades later Jules Koenig resurrected the party in the form of Union Mauricienne from 1946 to 1953 before being re-branded to Ralliement Mauricien prior to the 1953 Legislative Council Elections. Koenig changed the party's name to Parti Mauricien after its defeat at the 1953 elections. Constituencies Of Mauritius
Constituencies of Mauritius are the electoral boundaries within the Republic of Mauritius. They are also commonly referred to as ''Circonscriptions'' amongst the locals. The country follows the Westminster system and elects 60 members of parliament for a term of 5 years. There are in all 21 Constituencies in the republic, each of them returning 3 members with the exception of Constituency n°21, which returns only 2 members. The Constitution stipulates that there shall be 20 constituencies and one created specially for the Rodrigues island. Those electoral boundaries are considered to be the main pillars for elections as they allow members of parliament to be elected and thus to form the government. The Independence Party was the name of a coalition of 3 major political parties on the island of Mauritius in the 1960s and 1970s. It was also commonly known as Parti de L'indépendance. It was formed in 1966 to unite the Labour Party (Mauritius), Independent Forward Bloc (IFB) and Comité d'Action Musulman (CAM) at the time when the island nation was a colony of Great Britain. Best Loser System
The Best Loser System (BLS) refers to the method used in Mauritius since the 1950s to guarantee ethnic representation across the entire electorate in the National Assembly without organising the representation wholly by ethnicity. The BLS was strongly advocated by Comité d'Action Musulman (CAM) leader Abdool Razack Mohamed after none of the 6 Muslim candidates, including himself, was elected at the 1948 general elections. Mohamed was supported by Labour Party's Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and IFB's Sookdeo Bissoondoyal during his lobby for the BLS. Despite having been devised to ensure ethnoreligious representation in Parliament, the Best Loser System has allowed the existence of a parliamentary opposition on three occasions, namely in 1982, 1995 and 2024 when none of the elected members were from the opposition. The 1965 Mauritius race riots in Trois Boutiques refers to a number of violent clashes that started in the village of Trois Boutiques, Souillac on 10 May 1965 and progressed to the historic village of Mahébourg. The unrest eventually led to the declaration of a nationwide State of Emergency on what was then a British colony. This was well before the subsequent 1966 riots and 1968 riots associated with the 1967 elections which preceded the country's independence on 12 March 1968. The first two victims of the riots were Police Constable Jacques Pierre Clément Beesoo and civilian Robert Brousse de Laborde (28 years old) in Trois Boutiques. News of the Trois Boutiques murders spread to surrounding areas. Mauritian Creoles
Mauritian Creoles are the people on the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, Agaléga and the Chagos Archipelago and in the wider overseas Mauritian diaspora who trace their roots to continental Africans who were brought to Mauritius under slavery from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. The majority of these enslaved people came from the region in and around modern day Mozambique and Madagascar (with significant minorities from other parts of Africa and even some from Asia). Creole peoples (a grouping which Mauritian Creoles are a part of) can be found on other islands in the Mascarene Islands (including Reunion island and the Seychelles) and these groups all share cultural and linguistic connections with one another stemming from the common heritage of their African ancestors.
