Alex Johnson (firefighter)
Alex Johnson QFSM (born 1967) is a British firefighter, named the “Most Influential Woman in Fire” at the Excellence in Fire and Emergency Awards in December 2019. In January 2020, she started serving as the Chief Fire Officer of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority (SYFRA). When Johnson started out as a firefighter in Derbyshire in 1992, aged 24, only 1% of firefighters in the UK were women. She said: “I never saw another female firefighter from one month to the next, there were so few of us.” Career Alex Johnson joined South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue as Assistant Chief Fire Officer in 2017, before being promoted to Deputy Chief Fire Officer in December 2017. She had previously served with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service for over 25 years, having joined as a firefighter in 1992. Chief Fire Officer
Chief fire officer (CFO), formerly often just chief officer, is the highest rank in the fire and rescue services of the United Kingdom. There are currently 50 chief fire officers serving in the United Kingdom in charge of the local authority fire services. There is also a chief fire officer responsible for the Ministry of Defence Fire Services, which includes the Defence Fire and Rescue Service and the RAF Fire Service. Some UK airport fire services also designate their seniors officers as CFOs, though these officers rarely wear the same rank insignia as a local authority chief fire officer. Other titles for this office can include county fire officer and chief executive, neither of which are in common use. Queen's Fire Service Medal
__NOTOC__ The King's Fire Service Medal, introduced in 1954, is awarded to members of the fire services in the United Kingdom for distinguished service or gallantry. It was also formerly awarded by Commonwealth countries, most of which now have their own honours systems. Members of recognised fire brigades were eligible for the '' King's Police Medal'' from its creation in July 1909, with the award renamed the ''King's Police and Fire Services Medal'' in September 1940. In 1954 separate medals were established for the police and the Fire Service, with the '' Queen's Police Medal'' and the ''Queen's Fire Service Medal'' both instituted on 19 May 1954.
