Alex Corina
Alexander John Corina, known as Alex Corina (born 10 October 1950 in Bradford), is an artist and community worker based in Garston, Liverpool. Alex Corina was born in Bradford, where he attended Buttershaw Comprehensive School and Bradford College of Art. He moved in 1986 to Liverpool, where he worked as a civil servant for the Drugs Prevention and Community Safety Unit. Corina is known in Liverpool for his picture the Mona Lennon which features the Mona Lisa, John Lennon and the Liverpool waterfront in the background. It is a work that aims to represent Liverpool's past, present and future. In 2007, Corina was named as one of Bradford College's 175 heroes as a celebration of 175 years providing education and training in Bradford. Garston, Merseyside
Garston is a district of Liverpool. Historically in Lancashire, it is bordered by the suburbs of Grassendale, Allerton, and Speke. It lies on the Eastern banks of the River Mersey. History In medieval times, Garston was home to a group of Benedictine monks. The first recorded mention of settlement in Garston is of the Church of St Michael in 1235. By the 19th century, the area had become a small village, one of the eight townships forming the parish of Childwall. A small dock was first built at Garston in 1793 for Blackburne's Saltworks, which still stands today. Garston's growth accelerated rapidly in the 1840s, when in 1846, the area's first dock was constructed and opened, under the auspices of the St Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway Company. Bradford is a city status in the United Kingdom, city and the administrative centre of the City of Bradford district in West Yorkshire, England. Buttershaw Comprehensive School
Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form located in the Buttershaw area of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. History It opened on 3 September 1956 as Buttershaw Secondary School, with only one three storey teaching block as it was only half built. The initial intake was 300 children and 12 staff. Mr H E Cooke was the first headmaster. Over the next seven years a house block, theatre and swimming pool were added with an official opening in 1964. The school was built to accommodate the baby boom caused by the large number of children born after the end of the Second World War. It was renamed Buttershaw Comprehensive School, and over the years it evolved into an Upper, then High School, removing its pool for an AstroTurf field. Wellington School was a small private grammar school in Wellington Road, Bebington, Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, England. History Founded by John Philip Fogg (born 1917) in 1953, the main school building (Mount Allars) was bought with the accrued 'war pay' owed to Mr Fogg, who was an officer in the mercantile marine, captured in 1941 by the Japanese and held as a POW for four years. Bob Cryer
George Robert Cryer (3 December 1934 – 12 April 1994) was an English Labour Party politician from Yorkshire. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Keighley from 1974 until his defeat in 1983. He then served as the Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Sheffield from 1984 to 1989, and returned to the Commons as MP for Bradford South from 1987 until his death in 1994. The National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) was a British trade union which existed between 1908 and 1993. It represented public sector workers in local government, the Health Service, universities, and water authorities. Thornton View Hospital
Thornton View hospital was an 82-bed geriatric hospital near Clayton, West Yorkshire, on the site of the North Bierley Union workhouse. History The hospital has its origins in the North Bierly Union Workhouse which opened in 1858. The workhouse established its own infirmary from an early stage but benefited from a dedicated male infirmary block from 1872. The hospital joined the National Health Service in 1948. The hospital was slated for closure in 1983 to cut expenditure, which led to bitter resentment by the residents of the city of Bradford. The hospital had 82 beds with 70 patients and housed primarily long term elderly patients with no living family members. The impending closure threatened to distribute the long term patients to similar facilities nearby. The closure was discussed in Parliament in January 1983 and again in June 1984.
