Alex Collins (politician)
G.H. Alex Collins (August 28, 1876 – May 1949) was a photographer, soldier, and political figure in Ontario, Canada. George Hamilton Alexander Collins. He was mayor of Eastview in 1921 and from 1928 to 1930. Collins was born in Ottawa, the son of Peter Collins and Sarah Henry, and was educated there. He entered the Canadian Army before the end of the 19th century, becoming sergeant-major in 1913. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Dragoons and the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles and served in the Second Boer War and World War I. Collins married Jennie Gordon. He was elected to the first municipal council for Eastview in 1913. Collins ran unsuccessfully for the position of mayor in 1915. He served as acting mayor in 1921 following the death of Camille Gladu but was unsuccessful when he ran for that post in the election held the following year. Vanier, Ontario
Vanier, formerly Eastview, is a neighbourhood in the Rideau-Vanier Ward of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada's east end. Historically francophone and working class, the neighbourhood was a separate city until being amalgamated into Ottawa in 2001. It no longer has a majority francophone population. By 2012 its francophone population had shrunk to less than 40% from 63% in the early 1980s. The neighbourhood is located on the east bank of the Rideau River, across from the neighbourhoods of Lowertown and Sandy Hill, and just south of Rockcliffe Park, New Edinburgh, Lindenlea, and Manor Park. The Royal Canadian Dragoons (RCD) is the senior armoured regiment of the Canadian Army by precedence. It is one of three armoured regiments in the Regular Force and forms part of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. The colonel-in-chief of The RCD is Charles III, King of Canada. The Second Boer War ( af, Tweede Vryheidsoorlog, , 11 October 189931 May 1902), also known as the Boer War, the Anglo–Boer War, or the South African War, was a conflict fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics (the South African Republic and the Orange Free State) over the Empire's influence in Southern Africa from 1899 to 1902. Camille Gladu
Camille Gladu (October 20, 1872 – November 5, 1921) was the first mayor of Eastview, Ontario, later known as Vanier. Gladu was born in Clarence Creek, Ontario in 1872. In 1880, his family came to Janeville Janeville is a community in Gloucester County, New Brunswick on the Chaleur Bay. The Community is located at the Intersection of Route 11 and Route 340. It straddles the boundary between Bathurst and New Bandon Parishes and is part of the loc .... He became a butcher by trade. In 1909, Janeville became part of the village of Eastview and, in 1911, Gladu was elected prefect. When Eastview became a town two years later, he continued as mayor until 1916 when he lost the position to John Herbert White. He then took the office of Chief of Police. In 1920, Gladu ran for mayor against White and lost, but protested the election due to voting irregularities. He was declared mayor. David Langelier
David Langelier (February 1883 – November 22, 1922) was a political figure in Ontario, Canada. He served as mayor of Eastview in 1931 and 1932. He was born in Saint-Barnabé, Quebec, the son of Pierre Langelier, and was educated in Saint-Hyacinthe and Ottawa. Langelier worked as a clerk with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. In 1907, he married Florida Paquette. He became manager of the Caisse Populaire in Eastview in 1918. Langelier was elected to the municipal council for Eastview in 1924 and was elected prefect in 1924 and 1927. He ran unsuccessfully for the position of mayor in 1928. Langelier defeated G.H. Alex Collins in December 1930 to become mayor of Eastview. He was defeated by Donat Grandmaître when he ran for reelection in December 1932. Langelier moved to Ottawa, where he was employed as a salesperson by L. P. Marcotte Ltée. He died at his eldest daughter's home in Montreal at the age of 69.
