Alex Barnett (mathematician)
Alex Barnett (born 1972) is a senior mathematician at the Flatiron Institute and professor of mathematics at Dartmouth College. Barnett is also a jazz and funk musician. He has composed the music for a number of films by his wife, director Liz Canner. Career Barnett attended Cambridge University and received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Harvard University. He has written on topics such as efficient and accurate computational methods for waves, PDE eigenvalue problems, periodic problems, and quantum chaos. His high-frequency eigenfunction calculations are some of the fastest in the world. Barnett was on the faculty at Dartmouth for twelve years before becoming a full professor in 2017. He was the third person hired at the Flatiron Institute and is currently a senior mathematician there. Flatiron Institute
The Flatiron Institute is an American internal research division of the Simons Foundation, launched in 2016. The mission of the Flatiron Institute is to advance scientific research through computational methods, including data analysis, theory, modeling, and simulation. Liz Canner
Liz Canner is an American filmmaker who makes documentaries, digital public art installations and new media projects on human rights issues. Her documentary ''Deadly Embrace: Nicaragua, The World Bank and the IMF'' (1995), was one of the first films to look critically at the effects of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank policy and globalization. In 2009 Canner directed The New York Times Critic's Pick '' Orgasm Inc.: The Strange Science of Female Pleasure'' (2009), a feature-length investigative documentary on the pharmaceutical industry and women's health. Canner is the founder and director oAstrea Media, Inc. a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating media projects on human rights issues. Eigenfunction
