Alessandro Lanfredini
Alessandro Lanfredini (1 November 1826 – 19 May 1900) was an Italian painter of the Romantic period, mainly depicting genre scenes and events leading to Italian independence. Biography He was born in Florence but died in Pisa. He was born to an iron artisan, and began his studies in 1838 at the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence, studying design and sculpture, but switching in 1847 to painting. He studied under Giuseppe Bezzuoli and then Enrico Pollastrini. In 1844–1850, he was awarded various prizes for designs. He was an early participant in the artist meetings at the Caffè Michelangiolo in Florence. Telemaco Signorini described him as rather stern in his democratic Jacobin leanings. Silvestro Lega
Silvestro Lega (8 December 1826 – 21 September 1895) was an Italian realist painter. He was one of the leading artists of the Macchiaioli and was also involved with the Mazzini movement. Biography He was born in Modigliana, near Forlì, to an affluent family. From 1838 he attended the Piarist College, where his skill at drawing became evident. From 1843 to 1847 he attended the Accademia di Belle Arti, Florence, studying drawing under Benedetto Servolini (1805–79) and Tommaso Gazzarrini (1790–1853), then studying painting, briefly, under Giuseppe Bezzuoli. During 1847 he attended Luigi Mussini’s school, where the teaching emphasized the 15th-century Florentine principles of drawing and orderly construction. Giovanni Boldini
Giovanni Boldini (31 December 1842 – 11 January 1931) was an Italian genre and portrait painter who lived and worked in Paris for most of his career. According to a 1933 article in ''Time'' magazine, he was known as the "Master of Swish" because of his flowing style of painting. Early life Boldini was born in Ferrara, Italy on 31 December 1842. He was the son of a painter of religious subjects, and the younger brother of architect Luigi (Louis) Boldini. In 1862, he went to Florence for six years to study and pursue painting. He only infrequently attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts, but in Florence, met other realist painters known as the Macchiaioli, who were Italian precursors to Impressionism. Their influence is seen in Boldini's landscapes which show his spontaneous response to nature, although it is for his portraits that he became best known. Angiolo Tricca
Angiolo Tricca (17 February 1817 – 23 March 1884) was an Italian caricaturist and painter of historical themes. Born in Sansepolcro, he became a pupil of the painter Vincenzo Chialli. His best known works are the caricatures of Italian artists who attended the Caffè Michelangiolo in Florence (such as Collodi, Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini and Odoardo Borrani). He collaborated with making satirical cartoons, often pseudonymously, for journals published in Florence such as ''Il Piovano Arlotto'', ''Il Lampione'', and ''La Lanterna di Diogene''. He also opened a gallery and antiquarian shop, where he often copied or repaired antique works. Serafino De Tivoli
Serafino De Tivoli (March 18261892) was an Italian painter of the Macchiaioli group. Biography He was born in Livorno. After initial study of literature at a religious private school in Florence, he began his artistic training under Carlo Markò the Elder. He met Vito D'Ancona during the mid-1840s, and joined him in painting landscapes ''en plein air''. In 1848 he fought as a Tuscan volunteer for Garibaldi in the Risorgimento. In 1855 his paintings, exhibited at the Florentine Promotrice exhibition, brought him to the attention of the artists who frequented the Caffè Michelangiolo in Florence (including those who would later become known as the Macchiaioli). In that same year he traveled to Paris, where he was greatly impressed by the paintings of the Barbizon school. Stefano Ussi
Stefano Ussi (3 September 1822 - 1901) was an Italian painter, known first for his history paintings, and later for depicting Orientalist, mostly Arabian and Moroccan subjects. Biography He was born in Florence and studied there at the Academy of Fine Arts under Enrico Pollastrini. Among his colleagues there were Pietro Benvenuti and Giuseppe Bezzuoli. After studying at the Academy, he enrolled volunteer in the first war of independence, during which he was taken prisoner by the Austrian troops. After returning to Florence, he won the Triennale prize for the painting of the ''Resurrection of Lazarus'' in 1849, and presented works for the following years on historical and literary subjects at the exhibitions of the Florentine Società Promotrice di Belle Arti, which was led by Filippo Palizzi.
