Alessandro Amodio
Alessandro Amodio (1831 — 22 June 1861) was an Italian baritone who had an active international career as an opera singer from 1852 until his death from yellow fever nine years later in 1861. After making his debut at the Teatro di San Carlo at the age of 21, he spent the next four years performing roles at opera houses in Italy, including La Fenice in Venice, La Scala in Milan, the Teatro Goldoni in Livorno, and the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca. He first came to the United States in the late spring and summer of 1855 with the Max Maretzek Italian Opera Company with whom he portrayed Count di Luna in the United States premiere of Giuseppe Verdi's '' Il trovatore'' at the Academy of Music in New York City on May 2, 1855. ''Dwight's Journal of Music'' (1852–1881, ''DJM'') was an American music journal, one of the most respected and influential such periodicals in the country in the mid-19th century. John Sullivan Dwight created the Journal, and published it in Boston, Massachusetts. Among the early writers was Alexander Wheelock Thayer, who would become one of the first major music historians in the country. Other contributors have included John Knowles Paine, William F. Tacón Theatre
The Teatro Tacón (Tacón Theatre) opened in 1838 in Havana, Cuba. Its auditorium contained 2,750 seats. It was built by , a businessman from Barcelona who moved to Havana, and named after Miguel Tacón y Rosique, Governor of Cuba from 1834 to 1838. In 1847 Bottesini's opera ''Cristoforo Colombo'' premiered there. By 1855, so many people attended events that the city issued parking regulations for carriages on performance nights. Architecture The Teatro Tacón had excellent acoustics, so much so that the Gran Teatro de La Habana was built around its old hall. ''La muette de Portici'' (''The Mute Girl of Portici'', or ''The Dumb Girl of Portici''), also called ''Masaniello'' () in some versions, is an opera in five acts by Daniel Auber, with a libretto by Germain Delavigne, revised by Eugène Scribe. The work has an important place in music history as the earliest French grand opera. It is also known for its alleged role in the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Background The opera was first given at the Salle Le Peletier of the Paris Opéra on 29 February 1828. ''Linda di Chamounix'' is an operatic '' melodramma semiserio'' in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. The Italian libretto was written by Gaetano Rossi. It premiered in Vienna, at the Kärntnertortheater, on 19 May 1842. Performance history ''Linda di Chamounix'' was first presented in the UK on 1 June 1843, with its New York premiere following on 4 January 1847 at Palmo's Opera House. Antonio Giuglini
Antonio Giuglini (16 or 17 January 1825 – 12 October 1865) was an Italian operatic tenor. During the last eight years of his life, before he developed signs of mental instability, he earned renown as one of the leading stars of the operatic scene in London. He created several major roles for British audiences, appearing in the first London performances of Gounod's ''Faust (opera), Faust'' and Verdi's ''Un ballo in maschera''. In London, he was the usual stage partner of the great dramatic soprano Thérèse Tietjens. Early career in Italy Guiglini was born at Fano in Italy's middle/north-east. Adelaide Borghi-Mamo (9 August 1826 – 29 September 1901) was an Italian operatic mezzo-soprano who had an active international career from the 1840s through the 1880s. She was married to tenor Michele Mamo and their daughter, soprano Erminia Borghi-Mamo, also had a successful singing career.
