Aleria Standoff
The Aleria standoff was a confrontation between members of the French Gendarmerie and Corsican nationalist militants who entrenched themselves in a wine cellar at Aleria, Corsica, on 21 and 22 August 1975. The armed activists belonged to the radical nationalist party Action Régionaliste Corse (ARC). The occupation resulted in a strong reaction of the French government and is regarded as the precursor of the Corsican conflict. Background The roots of the modern Corsican conflict can be traced to the assignment by the French public corporation SOMIVAC (Société pour la mise en valeur de la Corse) of fertile lands in the eastern part of the island to pied-noir farmers since 1957. The process of chaptalization and adulteration in the production drove down the quality of Corsican wines, and led to a boycott in mainland France's markets. Guerrilla wars The Corsican conflict (Corsican language, Corsican: ''Conflittu Corsu''; French language, French: ''Conflit Corse'') is an armed and political conflict on the island of Corsica which began in 1976 between the government of France and Corsican nationalism, Corsican nationalist militant groups, mainly the National Liberation Front of Corsica (Fronte di Liberazione Naziunale di a Corsica, FLNC) and factions of the group. Beginning in the 1970s, the Corsican conflict peaked in the 1980s before Corsican nationalist groups and the French government reached a truce with one of the two main splinters of the FLNC, the FLNC-Union of Combatants (FLNC-Unione di i Cumbattenti, FLNC-UC) in June 2014. In 2016, the other main splinter, the FLNC-22nd of October (FLNC-22 Uttrovi, FLNC-22U) also declared a truce. Zodiac Nautic, formerly Zodiac Marine & Pool, then Zodiac Marine, is a French company known for their inflatable boats. Originating as an airship company, the boating division was split off from the aerospace-focused Zodiac Group in 2007. In France, "''zodiac''" has become a genericized trademark for an inflatable boat.
