Alejandro Williams
Alejandro Leonel Williams Cordero (born 28 October 1969) is a dentist and politician from the Dominican Republic. He was Senator for the province of San Pedro de Macorís. Williams has a doctorate in medicine from the Universidad Central del Este; thereafter he migrated to the United States and opened a dental clinic in The Bronx. The expansion on his business caused him to have eight clinics throughout NYC. In May 2006, Williams was elected as Senator of San Pedro de Macorís with 50.46% of the votes, winning over Social Christian Reformist Party's José Hazim Frappier, heir of an economic empire that includes Williams's alma mater. Williams's tenure was marked by a low participation in meetings and committees, which by 2008 would be virtually nil. Senate Of The Dominican Republic
The Senate of the Dominican Republic () is the upper house in the bicameral legislature of the Dominican Republic, and together with the Chamber of Deputies makes up the Congress. The composition and powers of the Senate are established in Third Title, Chapter 1 in the First Section of the Dominican Constitution. Each province, and the Distrito Nacional, regardless of population, is represented by one senator who serves for a four-year term, with possibility of reelection. The Senate Chamber is located in the west wing of the Congress Palace, in Santo Domingo. The Chamber of Deputies convenes in the east wing of the same building. 2010 Dominican Republic Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in the Dominican Republic on 16 May 2010 to elect the 32 members of the Senate and 183 members of the Chamber of Deputies. Polls forecasted a victory for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) of President Leonel Fernández. Before the election, 96 of the 178 Chamber of Deputies seats and 22 of the 32 Senate seats were controlled by the PLD. The elections were held alongside local elections in 155 municipalities and elections for 20 seats in the Central American Parliament. ''Listín Diario'' (Lit. ''Small Daily List'') is one of the leading newspapers in the Dominican Republic, and the oldest still being published. History ''Listín Diario'' was founded as ''Listín Diario Marítimo'' on 1 August 1889 by Arturo Pellerano Alfau and Julian Atiles, two merchants who endeavored to inform the general public of the arrival and departure of merchant ships into Dominican ports. Soon after what began as a single page became a broadsheet newspaper, printed out of the Pellerano & Atiles offices in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.
