Aleana Young
Aleana Young (') is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan in the 2020 Saskatchewan general election. She represents the electoral district of Regina South Albert as a member of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party caucus. Career Prior to her election to the legislature, Young served on Regina's public school board and owned and operated a gourmet cheese shop. She was pregnant during the election campaign and gave birth to a daughter the day before the election. She defeated Tina Beaudry-Mellor, the incumbent MLA from the Saskatchewan Party. On November 4, 2020, Young was named NDP critic for Economy and Jobs, Immigration, Trade, Sask Builds, Central Services, SGI, and Sask Power, in addition to serving as the NDP deputy House Leader. As of June 22, 2024, she serves as the Official Opposition Whip and the Official Opposition critic for Jobs and Economy, Trade and Export Development, SaskPower, Energy and Resources, and Forestry. ...

Whip (politics)
A whip is an official of a political party whose task is to ensure party discipline (that members of the party vote according to the party platform rather than their constituents, conscience vote, individual conscience or donors) in a legislature. Whips are the party's "enforcers". They work to ensure that their fellow political party legislators attend voting sessions and vote according to their party's official policy. Members who vote against party policy may "lose the whip", being expelled from the party. The term is said to be taken from the "wikt:whipper-in, whipper-in" during a hunt, who tries to prevent hounds from wandering away from a hunting pack. The term may more reasonably have been taken from the practice of "keeping discipline" in slaves by cracking a leather whip over their heads. Additionally, the term "whip" may mean the voting instructions issued to legislators, or the status of a certain legislator in their party's parliamentary grouping. Etymology ...
