Alcalá La Real
Alcalá la Real is a city in the province of Jaén, Spain. According to the 2024 INE figures, the city had a population of 21,581. Geography Alcalá la Real is situated from the provincial capital, Jaén, and from Granada, on the slopes of La Mota, a hill in the Sierra Sur. It has an area of 261.36 km². The town is dominated by a large Moorish fortress around which, some centuries ago, the settlement evolved. Alcalá la Real is connected to the Guadalquivir valley via the Guadajoz tributary. History Remains from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age show a human presence in the area in prehistoric times. It has been hypothesized that this was one of the last places inhabited by Neanderthal man. Alcalus
''Alcalus'' is a small genus of frogs in the family Ceratobatrachidae. It is the only member of the subfamily Alcalinae. Its sister taxon is Ceratobatrachinae. Common name Alcala's dwarf mountain frogs has been proposed for the genus. They are found in Palawan (island), Palawan Island (the Philippines), Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula. They prefer semi-aquatic microhabitats. Etymology The genus is named in honour of Angel Alcala, a Filipino biologist who has worked with Southeast Asian amphibians. Description Compared to the closely related genera ''Cornufer'' and ''Platymantis'', ''Alcalus'' have an intermediate body size (based on ''Alcalus baluensis'' and ''Alcalus mariae, A. mariae'', males measure and females in snout–vent length). Alcalá 20 Nightclub Fire
The Alcalá 20 nightclub fire occurred on 17 December 1983 at 4:45 a.m. at Alcalá 20, a nightclub at number 20 Calle de Alcalá in the centre of Madrid. There were 600 people in the club at the time; 82 people were killed and 27 injured. During the fire, an exit on one of the upper floors was locked, and a main exit to an adjoining building was closed with an iron grill. The charred remains of the labyrinthine four story subterranean club remained intact but closed until 2003, when a major refurbishment was started. A remodelled two-story club, named ''Adraba'', opened on the site in 2005 with improved fire safety. However it was closed down by city authorities after only three hours. In November 2007 the club was reopened, but was closed down once again within a few hours by the authorities. Calle de Alcalá is among the longest streets in Madrid. It starts at the Puerta del Sol and goes on for , to the northeastern outskirts of the city. Puerta De Alcalá
The Puerta de Alcalá is a Neo-classical gate in the Plaza de la Independencia in Madrid, Spain. It was a gate of the former Walls of Philip IV. It stands near the city center and several meters away from the main entrance to the Parque del Buen Retiro. The square is bisected by Alcalá Street, although the street does not cross through the monument, and it is the origin of the Alfonso XII, Serrano and Olózaga streets. Its name originates from the old path from Madrid to the nearby town of Alcalá de Henares. Madrid in the late 18th century still looked like a somewhat drab borough, surrounded by medieval walls. Around the year 1774, King Charles III commissioned Francesco Sabatini to construct a monumental gate in the city wall through which an expanded road to the city of Alcalá was to pass, replacing an older, smaller, gate that stood nearby. The University of Alcalá () is a public university located in Alcalá de Henares, a city 35 km (22 miles) northeast of Madrid in Spain and also the third-largest city of the region.
