Alborada (horse)
Alborada (8 March 1995 – February 2012) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning consecutive runnings of the Group One Champion Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. In a racing career which lasted from July 1997 until October 1999 she won six of her ten races. In addition to her wins in the Champion Stakes she also won the C. L. Weld Park Stakes in 1997 and the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Nassau Stakes in 1998. Following her retirement from racing she had some success as a dam of winners. Background Alborada was a grey mare bred by her owner Kirsten Rausing at the Lanwades Stud at Moulton near Newmarket. She was sired by Alzao, a son of Lyphard who never won above Group Three level, but became a successful breeding stallion, with his progeny including Maraahel (Hardwicke Stakes), Winona, Second Set and Shahtoush. Alzao
Alzao (28 February 1980 – 19 July 2007) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was trained in France during his racing career and won four races including the Prix Matchem and the Premio Ellington. After his retirement from racing he became a very successful breeding stallion who was noted for the quality of his female offspring. Background Alzao was a "strong, compact" bay horse with a white blaze and white socks on his front legs bred in Kentucky by Shira Racing. He was sent to race in Europe where he entered the ownership of Jean-Luc Lagardère and was sent into training with Francois Boutin in France. He was sired by Lyphard, an American-bred stallion who raced in France, winning the Prix Jacques Le Marois and Prix de la Forêt in 1972. Winona (horse)
Winona (21 March 1995 – after 2013) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her win in the Irish Oaks. In a racing career which lasted from July 1997 until November 1998 she raced in four different countries and compiled a record of two wins one second and one third from nine starts. As a two-year-old in 1997 she showed considerable promise when winning on her first appearance and later finished second in the Group 3 C L Weld Park Stakes. In the following year she finished fourth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and third in the Coronation Stakes before being stepped up in distance and recording an emphatic win in the Irish Oaks. She was well beaten in her last two races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Her record as a broodmare was poor. Nottingham Racecourse
Nottingham Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England. It is situated at Colwick Park, close to the River Trent and about 3 km east of the city centre. Characteristics There are actually two courses at Nottingham, one inside the other. They are both approximately 1 1/2 miles round and are left-handed. The inner is used during spring and autumn, and has a 5 furlong straight, the outer is used during summer and has a 6 furlong straight. The course generally has easy turns and minor gradients, but the home turn is fairly sharp. Nottingham suits well-balanced horses rather than long-striding ones. In horse racing a maiden race is an event for horses that have not won a race. Horses that have not won a race are referred to as maidens. Maiden horse races are held over a variety of distances and under conditions with eligibility based on the sex or age of the horse. Races may be handicaps, set weights, or weight for age. In many countries, maiden races are the lowest level of class and represent an entry point into a racing career. A furlong is a measure of distance in imperial units and United States customary units equal to one eighth of a mile, equivalent to 660 feet, 220 yards, 40 rods, 10 chains or approximately 201 metres. George Duffield
__NOTOC__ George Duffield MBE (born 30 November 1946) is an English retired flat racing jockey. He served a seven-year apprenticeship with Jack Waugh, and rode his first winner on 15 June 1967 at Great Yarmouth Racecourse on a horse called Syllable, trained by Waugh. He became stable jockey for trainer John Oxley in 1970, but this was not to be a successful partnership, and they split in 1972. After riding freelance for a bit, he was to become first jockey to trainer Sir Mark Prescott in 1974, a partnership which was to prove most enduring and fruitful. George Duffield spent 30 years as stable jockey to Prescott, riding 830 winners for him, including successes in Ireland, France and Belgium.
