Alberto Pacheco
Alberto Pacheco Balmaceda (1935–1983) was a Colombian musician and songwriter. He won the accordionist competition of the Vallenato Legend Festival in 1971. Biography Alberto Pacheco was born on 23 June 1935 in Barranquilla. As a young man Pacheco would visit the Chop Suey restaurant in Barranquilla to see musicians such as Rafael Mejía Romani and his Trío Serenata perform. In the early 1950s he started to gain prominence as an accordionist with his group Los Campesinos del Magdalena, whose other members were Juan Madrid and Esteban Montano on guitar, Carlos "Comecuero" Perdomo on the drum, and Carlos Vélez on guacharaca. In 1960 Pacheco travelled to Mexico with Julio Bovea. On returning he joined the Bogotano group Los Universitarios led by Pedro García Díaz; they performed in Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. Adolfo Pacheco
Adolfo Rafael Pacheco Anillo (1940–2023) was a Colombian musician and songwriter. He composed several well-known songs in the Colombian folk music genre of vallenato, notably "La Hamaca Grande" which has been recorded by artists including Johnny Ventura and Carlos Vives. Biography Early life and education Adolfo Pacheco was born in San Jacinto, Colombia on 8 August 1940. His parents were Miguel Pacheco Blanco and Mercedes Anillo Herrera. Pacheco was named after Adolf Hitler, whose name was frequently heard by his parents on their radio around the time of his birth. Pacheco attended secondary school in Ciénaga, Magdalena. The Barranquilla Carnival (') is one of Colombia's most important folkloric celebrations, and one of the biggest carnivals in the world. The carnival has traditions that date back to the 19th century. Four days before Lent, Barranquilla decks itself out to receive national and foreign tourists to join together with the city's inhabitants to enjoy four days of intense festivities. The Golden Congo (Spanish: ) is a Colombian music award that since its founding in 1969 has been presented annually at the Orchestra Festival (Spanish: ) of the Barranquilla Carnival. The current Golden Congo award comprises six genre prizes: Vallenato (since 1978), Merengue (since 1994), Tropical (since 1994), Salsa (since 1994), Urbano (since 2012), Folk (1992–4, and again since 2018), and four additional prizes: Newcomer, Best Vocalist, Best Instrumentalist and ("What's Ours"). Merengue Vallenato
Vallenato () is a popular folk music genre from Colombia. It primarily comes from its Caribbean region. ''Vallenato'' literally means "born in the valley". The valley influencing this name is located between the ''Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta'' and the '' Serranía de Perijá'' in north-east Colombia. The name also applies to the people from the city where this genre originated: Valledupar (from the place named ''Valle de Upar'' – "Valley of Upar"). Rafael Escalona
Rafael Calixto Escalona Martinez (May 26, 1926 – May 13, 2009) was a Colombian composer and troubadour. He was known for being one of the most prominent vallenato music composers and troubadours of the genre and for being the co-founder of the Vallenato Legend Festival, along with Consuelo Araújo and Alfonso López Michelsen. He was also a long-time friend of Gabriel García Márquez, who included him in his stories and once told him that his own masterpiece novel, ''One Hundred Years of Solitude'', was just a 350-page Vallenato. Escalona's songs compile the history and stories of the Magdalena Department of the past 20th century. Escalona was an atypical music composer: he does not play any instruments or sing so his songs can in some ways be difficult to analyze.
