Alberto Cardoso
Alberto Fernando Cardoso (17 October 1906 - deceased), is a former Portuguese footballer who played as a forward. Cardoso joined Benfica in 1930, where he spent four years, scoring 23 goals in 62 matches, winning two Primeira Liga's and two Campeonatos de Portugal. Career Born in Lisbon, Cardoso joined Benfica in 1930, making his debut on 26 October, against Belenenses. In his first year, he won the Campeonato de Portugal with Benfica, but the majority of his matches and goals were in the Campeonato de Lisboa. In his first years, he faced competition from Augusto Dinis and Vítor Silva, so his playing time was reduced and mainly spent in the Campeonato de Lisboa. Later, it was Valadas, Rogério and Carlos Torres, who beat him to the first team, so Cardoso played only sporadically over the course of his eight–years spell at Benfica, racking 23 goals in 62 appearances. Carlos Torres (1 April 1908 - deceased) is a former Portuguese footballer who played as a forward. Torres started at CD Torres Novas, moving to Benfica in 1933, where he spent four years, scoring 34 goals in 60 matches, winning the Primeira Liga and the Campeonato de Portugal. Career Born in Torres Novas, Torres played football for various clubs in his home-town, eventually settling at CD Torres Novas, where he spent seven seasons. In 1933, he moved to Benfica, making his debut on 25 February 1934, against Belenenses. He competed with Rogério and Vítor Silva, but was still the team top scorer, bagging seven goals in seven appearances. Forwards (also known as attackers) are outfield positions in an association football team who play the furthest up the pitch and are therefore most responsible for scoring goals as well as assisting them. Alfredo Valadas Mendes (16 February 1912 – 1994) was a Portuguese footballer who played as outside forward. Over the course of 10 seasons, he amassed Primeira Liga totals of 136 games and eighty six goals, all at Benfica, winning nine major titles. Club career Born in Minas de S. Domingos, Beja; Valadas started his career at Luso Sport Clube, a delegation of Sporting CP at only age 15. With 19 years-old, he moved to Lisbon to play for Sporting, with the promise that they help him find a job, which they never did. After two seasons, he moved back to Beja, spent a year without competing and then joined Sport Lisboa e Beja in the regional league. In 1934, he returned to Lisbon and joined Benfica, again with the promise to help him find a job, which they did, when he became a civil servant in 1937.
