Albert L. Becker
Albert Lilly Becker (December 3, 1911 – December 24, 1992) was an American naval officer during World War II who served as the first commander of the , a Gato-class submarine, during its initial five wartime patrols in the Pacific Ocean. Becker was born in Brookhaven, MS in 1911, the second child of William Henry Becker and Verna Lilly. He was educated in the parochial and public schools in Brookhaven and entered Mississippi A&M in 1928. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1930 and commissioned as an ensign in 1934. On a midshipmen's cruise, his ship stopped in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he met Marjorie Tarr at a dance. They were married in Charleston, SC in 1936. Becker attended Submarine School and was transferred to Pearl Harbor in 1936 where he served on the , and where his daughter Gail Becker Coolidge was born. Command At Sea Insignia
The Command at Sea insignia is a badge of the United States' seagoing services worn by officers on their uniforms to denote that they are the commander, or formerly a commander, of a warship. If the wearer is currently the commander of a warship, it is worn above the nametag, which is worn a quarter of an inch above the right chest pocket on a uniform shirt. Afterwards, the pin is moved to the left side of the shirt or jacket. For the commanders of land-based installations, a different but similar version known as the Command Ashore insignia instead. Wisconsin Maritime Museum
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is a maritime museum in the Lake Michigan port and shipbuilding city of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, U.S.. It preserves and teaches about the maritime history of the Great Lakes and Wisconsin. History The museum was founded in 1969 as the Manitowoc Submarine Memorial Association. The '' USS Cobia'' arrived in Manitowoc and was initially restored in 1970, and in 1986 became part of the museum as well as becoming a National Historic Landmark and joining the National Register of Historic Places.
