Albatros D.IV
The Albatros D.IV was an experimental Germany, German fighter aircraft built and tested during World War I. Design and development The D.IV was designed to test a Reduction drive, geared version of the 120 kW (160 hp) Mercedes D.III Piston engine, engine. Unlike the ungeared version, the geared engine was completely enclosed within the fuselage. The airframe basically combined the Albatros D.II, D.II wing cellule with the Albatros D.V, D.Va fuselage along with minor alterations to the rudder balance and the horizontal stabilizer. Three examples were ordered in November 1916, but only one was flown, which was tested with several types of propeller (aircraft), propeller, but excessive vibration problems and limited performance increase precluded further development. Albatros Flugzeugwerke GmbH was a German aircraft manufacturer best known for supplying the German airforces during World War I. The company was based in Johannisthal, Berlin, where it was founded by Walter Huth and Otto Wiener on December 20, 1909. The company (and its subsidiary, Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke (OAW)) produced some of the most capable fighter aircraft of World War I, notably the Albatros D.III and Albatros D.V, both designed by Robert Thelen for the firm. The works continued to operate until 1931, when it was merged into Focke-Wulf. History The company was founded in Berlin-Johannisthal the end of 1909 by Enno Walther Huth as Albatros Werke AG. Nieuport 17
The Nieuport 17 C.1 (or Nieuport XVII C.1 in contemporary sources) was a French sesquiplane fighter designed and manufactured by the Nieuport company during World War I. An improvement over the Nieuport 11, it was a little larger than earlier Nieuports and better adapted to the more powerful engine than the interim Nieuport 16. Aside from early examples, it had the new Alkan-Hamy synchronization gear, permitting the use of a fuselage-mounted synchronised Vickers gun firing through the propeller disc. At the time of its introduction in March 1916, the type's outstanding manoeuvrability and excellent rate of climb gave it a significant advantage over fighters on both sides and was described as "the best pursuit plane of the day". A tailplane, also known as a horizontal stabiliser, is a small lifting surface located on the tail (empennage) behind the main lifting surfaces of a fixed-wing aircraft as well as other non-fixed-wing aircraft such as helicopters and gyroplanes.
