Albany (suburb)
The suburb of Albany is the central business district of the City of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The suburb is bounded by the Princess Royal Harbour to the south. The southern terminus of the Albany Highway is located within the suburb, at York Street. The suburb is located on the traditional land of the Minang people of the Noongar nation. Albany Town Hall (Western Australia)
Albany Town Hall is a public building on York Street, Albany, York Street in Albany, Western Australia, Albany in the Great Southern (Western Australia), Great Southern region of Western Australia. It was the first civic building constructed in the town. Description The town hall is a two storied building with a stone exterior and four-faced clock tower. Heritage Council Of Western Australia
The Heritage Council of Western Australia is the Government of Western Australia agency created to identify, conserve and promote places of cultural heritage significance in the state. Prior to its creation, considerable variance in policy and political controversies arose over heritage issues in Western Australia, such as the Barracks Arch and the demolition of buildings in the Perth central business district. It was preceded by the Western Australian Heritage Committee, which had been heavily involved in the 1988 Australian Bicentenary, and the setting up of the W.A. Heritage Trails Network. The State Register of Heritage Places is the heritage register of historic sites in Western Australia deemed significant at the state level by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. History In the 1970s, following its establishment of the National Trust of Western Australia, the National Trust created a set of classified properties, and following legislation requiring inventories, Local Government authorities in Western Australia produced a subsequent set of Municipal Inventories, which then resulted in items then being included in the state register. As a result, most register records include dates and details from the three different processes. Mineng, also spelt Minang, Minanga, or Mirnong, are an Aboriginal Noongar people of southern Western Australia. Name The ethnonym ''Minang'' is etymologized to the word for south, ''minaq'', which means that the tribe were defined as "southerners". Country The Minang's traditional lands encompassed some from King George Sound northwards to the Stirling Range. It took in Tenterden, Lake Muir, Cowerup and the Shannon River area. York Street is the main street in the centre of Albany, Western Australia. It runs south from a junction with Albany Highway, Lockyer Avenue and Middleton Road, Albany, Middleton Road downhill towards Princess Royal Drive and the ANZAC Peace Park, Anzac Peace Park at the foot of the hill adjacent to Princess Royal Harbour.
