Alazani
The Alazani ( ) is a river that flows through the Caucasus. It is the main tributary of the Kura in eastern Georgia, and flows for . Part of its path forms the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan, before it meets the Kura at the Mingəçevir Reservoir in Azerbaijan. The river is likely the same as that referred to by classical authors Strabo and Pliny as "Alazonius" or "Alazon", and may also be the Abas River mentioned by Plutarch (Plut. ''Pomp.'' 35) and Dio Cassius (37.3) as the location of the Battle of the Abas (65 BCE). The Alazani originates in Upper Kakheti at the edge of the Greater Caucasus, south of the main ridge, in the northwestern part of the Akhmeta District. Kakheti
Kakheti (; ) is a region of Georgia. Telavi is its administrative center. The region comprises eight administrative districts: Telavi, Gurjaani, Qvareli, Sagarejo, Dedoplistsqaro, Signagi, Lagodekhi and Akhmeta. Kakhetians speak the Kakhetian dialect of Georgian. Alazani Floodplain Forests Natural Monument ( ka, ალაზნის ჭალა) is a floodplain forest located in Dedoplistsqaro Municipality on the banks of the Alazani River in southeastern Georgia. Location and access The Alazani floodplain forests are located on the right bank of the Alazani River to the southwest of the village Pirosmani, at above sea level. Georgian Wine
Georgia (country), Georgia is one of the oldest List of wine-producing countries, wine-producing countries in the world. The fertile valleys and protective slopes of the South Caucasus were home to grapevine cultivation and neolithic wine production ( ka, ღვინო, ''ɣvino'') for at least 8000 years. Due to millennia of winemaking and the prominent economic role it retains in Georgia to the present day, wine and viticulture are entwined with Georgia's national identity. Kura (South Caucasus River)
The Kura, also known in Georgian as Mtkvari ( ), is an east-flowing transboundary river south of the Greater Caucasus Mountains which drains the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus east into the Caspian Sea. It also drains the north side of the Lesser Caucasus, while its main tributary, the Aras, drains the south side of those mountains. Starting in northeastern Turkey, the Kura flows through to Georgia, then into Azerbaijan, where it receives the Aras as a right tributary, and finally enters the Caspian Sea. Akhmeta District
Akhmeta ( ka, ახმეტის მუნიციპალიტეტი, ''Axmeṫis municiṗaliṫeṫi'') is the administrative – territorial unit in Eastern Georgia (country), Georgia, in the region of Kakheti. Battle Of The Abas
The Battle of the Abas was fought in 65 BC between the forces of the Roman Republic under Pompey Magnus and those of the Caucasian Albanian King Oroeses during the course of the Third Mithridatic War. The battle took place on a flat plain by the River Abas (likely the modern Alazani), after the Roman forces had only recently crossed over it from the other bank, and with much dense forest nearby. Pompey's victory neutralised the threat of the Albanians rejoining with their old ally Mithridates in his attempts to rekindle his lost war with Rome. The battle is noteworthy for Pompey's concealment of his infantry behind a screen of cavalry, which would twenty years later be used against him at the Battle of Pharsalus. The Lopota ( ka, ლოპოტა) is a river in the far north-eastern part of the Kakheti region in Georgia. It flows through the village Lapanquri, and discharges into the Alazani near Telavi. Akhmeta ( ) is a town in Kakheti, Georgia, and is the administrative centre of Akhmeta Municipality. It is situated on the left side of Alazani, close to the Pankisi Gorge. Abas River
The Abas River (), was a river of Iberia in Asia, mentioned by Plutarch (Plut. ''Pomp.'' 35) and Dio Cassius (37.3) as crossed by Pompey, on his expedition into the Caucasian regions. Its course was east of the Cambyses (likely the modern Iori); and it seems to be the same as the "Alazonius" or "Alazon" of Strabo and Pliny which fell into the Cambyses just above its confluence with the Cyrus River (modern-day Kura River). Kvareli
Kvareli (, ) is a town in northeastern in Kakheti Province, Georgia.
