''Alaska'' is a 1988 historical novel by James A. Michener. Like other Michener titles, ''Alaska'' spans a considerable amount of time, traced through the gradual interlinking of several families. Plot introduction ''Alaska'' is 868 pages long. Along with the reading, Michener provides a table of contents, a list of acknowledgements, and a ''Fact and Fiction'' section. The third item offers the reader an insight into what occurred in real life and what the author invented. The Territory of Alaska or Alaska Territory was an organized incorporated territory of the United States from August 24, 1912, until Alaska was granted statehood on January 3, 1959. The history of Alaska dates back to the Upper Paleolithic period (around 14,000 Anno Domini, BC), when Hunter-gatherer, foraging groups crossed the Beringia, Bering land bridge into what is now western Alaska. Matanuska-Susitna Valley (; known locally as the Mat-Su or The Valley) is an area in Southcentral Alaska south of the Alaska Range about north of Anchorage, Alaska. It is known for the world record sized cabbages and other vegetables displayed annually in Palmer at the Alaska State Fair. It includes the valleys of the Matanuska, Knik, and Susitna Rivers. 11,000 of Mat-Su Valley residents commute to Anchorage for work (as of 2008). Taku Inlet
Taku Inlet is an inlet located in the U.S. state of Alaska. It extends in a northeast direction from Stephens Passage in the Alexander Archipelago, about southeast of Juneau, widening to a basin where discharge from the Taku River and Taku Glacier emerges. Geography Taku Inlet is suitable for use only for shallow Draft (hull), draft river boats, as it is shallow in depth and is a “cul-de-sac”. Taku Glacier is located at the head of this inlet. Since 1890, the glacier had moved by some into the Taku Inlet. As a result of the rapid movement of the glacier, silting has occurred at the head of the inlet. Alexander McKenzie (American Politician)
Alexander John McKenzie (1850–1922) was a lawman and politician in early North Dakota. As the Republican national committeeman from North Dakota, he directed a highly successful political machine, and was known as the "senator-maker." He was highly influential in North Dakota and in neighboring Montana and Minnesota. He served time in prison for corruption, and became the first North Dakotan to receive a presidential pardon. Biography Life McKenzie was born April 13, 1850, in New York, the son of Irish immigrants. It was rumored that he was born in Scotland or in Canada, but these rumors are not substantiated by the records. At age 17 McKenzie arrived in Dakota Territory in the United States. Chilkoot Pass
Chilkoot Pass (el. ) is a high mountain pass through the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains in the U.S. state of Alaska and British Columbia, Canada. It is the highest point along the Chilkoot Trail that leads from Dyea, Alaska to Bennett Lake, British Columbia. The Chilkoot Trail was long a route used by the Tlingit for trade. During the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th century, it was used by prospectors and packers to get through the mountains. During the gold rush, three aerial tramways and several surface hoists were constructed and operated briefly over the pass. Soapy Smith
Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith II (November 2, 1860 – July 8, 1898) was an American con artist and gangster in the American frontier and the Klondike. Smith operated confidence schemes across the Western United States, and had a large hand in organized criminal operations in both Colorado and the District of Alaska. Smith gained notoriety through his "prize soap racket," in which he would sell bars of soap with prize money hidden in some of the bars' packaging in order to increase sales. However, through sleight of hand, he ensured that only members of his gang purchased "prize" soap. The racket led to his sobriquet of "Soapy." The success of his soap racket and other scams helped him finance three successive criminal empires in Denver and Creede, both in Colorado, and in Skagway, Alaska.
