Alan Webster Neill
Alan Webster Neill (October 6, 1868 - July 7, 1960) was a Canadian politician. He was elected as MLA for the riding of Alberni in 1889 and 1900 serving until 1903. He was Alderman on the first Council of the newly incorporated Town of Alberni (1912) and Mayor from 1916 to 1917. Neill was MP for the riding of Comox—Alberni from December 6, 1921, to June 10, 1945. He arrived in the Alberni Valley in 1891 as a farmer and business owner of Pioneer Feed Store. From about 1908 to 1911 Neill was the Indian Agent for the West Coast of Vancouver Island enforcing federal government policies of assimilation and the residential school system. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada during the 1921 Election as the Progressive member for Comox-Alberni, British Columbia. 1945 Canadian Federal Election
The 1945 Canadian federal election was held on June 11, 1945, to elect members of the House of Commons of the 20th Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal government was re-elected to its third consecutive term, although this time with a minority government as the Liberals fell five seats short of a majority. Since 1939, Canada had been fighting in World War II. In May 1945, the war in Europe ended, allowing King to call an election. As the war in Asia was still raging on, King promised a voluntary force to fight in Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of Japan, while Progressive Conservative Party (PC Party) leader John Bracken promised conscription, which was an unpopular proposal and led to the PCs' third consecutive defeat. Tofino
Tofino ( ) is a town of approximately 2,516 residents on the west coast of Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The District of Tofino is located at the western terminus of Highway 4 on the tip of the Esowista Peninsula at the southern edge of Clayoquot Sound. It is situated in the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations. A popular year-round tourism destination, Tofino's summer population swells to many times its winter size. A W Neill Middle School
School District 70 Pacific Rim (formerly School District 70 Alberni) is a school district on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The board office and the majority of the schools are located in Port Alberni but the district extends to the west to include Ucluelet, Tofino, and Bamfield. At the request of the Board of School Trustees, the name of the district was changed from School District 70 Alberni to School District 70 Pacific Rim by the Province of British Columbia through an Order-in-Council on September 20, 2020. Schools Board of Education The district is governed by the school board, which consists of six school trustees elected from the Alberni Valley region, and one from the West Coast region. Angus MacInnis
Angus MacInnis (September 2, 1884 – March 3, 1964) was a Canadian socialist politician and parliamentarian. MacInnis, a trade unionist who had served for five years as a Vancouver Alderman, was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1930 election as an Independent Labour Member of Parliament. He joined the Ginger Group of socialist MPs led by J.S. Woodsworth. He helped form the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1932 and thereafter sat as a CCF MP. MacInnis retained his status as an MP through five subsequent elections until his retirement in 1957, but sat in three different ridings. From 1930 to 1935 he represented Vancouver South. Japanese Canadian Internment
From 1942 to 1949, Canada forcibly relocated and incarcerated over 22,000 Japanese Canadians—comprising over 90% of the total Japanese Canadian population—from British Columbia in the name of "national security". The majority were Canadian citizens by birth and were targeted based on their ancestry. This decision followed the events of the Japanese Empire's war in the Pacific against the Western Allies, such as the invasion of Hong Kong, the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and the Fall of Singapore which led to the Canadian declaration of war on Japan during World War II. 1925 Canadian Federal Election
The 1925 Canadian federal election was held on October 29, 1925 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 15th Parliament of Canada. The Conservative party took the most seats in the House of Commons, although not a majority. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal Party was invited to form a minority government. Unlike the Conservative party, King's Liberals had the conditional support of the many Farmer/Progressive MPs. The government fell the following year. Governor General Baron Byng of Vimy offered the Conservatives under Meighen a chance to form government. This too fell in short order. Alberni (electoral District)
Alberni was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It originally appeared in the 1890 British Columbia general election, 1890 election and then, after being merged into Cowichan-Alberni for the 1894 British Columbia general election, 1894 election, was renamed Alberni riding in the 1898 British Columbia general election, election of 1898. The riding lasted by that name until 1933 and 1937, when the name Alberni-Nanaimo was used. In 1941 the Alberni riding name was restored.
