Alan Dean (athlete)
Alan Dean (born 26 January 1942) is a British middle-distance running, middle-distance runner. He competed in the Athletics at the 1964 Summer Olympics – Men's 800 metres, men's 800 metres at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Alan first competed for England aged 21 in 1963 against Norway in Bergen, and also competed against Italy and Germany at White City in London. He also competed against Poland and other countries. Alan joined the Michelin tyre company as a pre-apprentice aged 15 and became a full apprentice at 16. He took up running as all employees had to take up a sport. He excelled at running and as a youth he was Staffordshire and Midland cross country champion. His talent was spotted by a coach from North Staffs and Stone Harriers who called at his home and asked him to join the club. Athletics At The 1964 Summer Olympics – Men's 800 Metres
The men's 800 metres was the middle of the seven men's track races in the Athletics at the 1964 Summer Olympics program in Tokyo. 47 athletes from 32 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The first round was held on 14 October, with the semifinals on 15 October and the final on 16 October. The event was won by Peter Snell of New Zealand, successfully defending his 1960 gold medal (the third man to do so), and completing the first half of his 800 metres/1500 metres double. Bill Crothers of Canada took silver, the first 800 metres medal for that nation since 1936 and matching Canada's best-ever result in the event (silver in 1932). Wilson Kiprugut's bronze was the first medal by Kenya in any event; Kenya would become a frequent fixture on the men's 800 metres podium. The , officially the and commonly known as Tokyo 1964 (), were an international multi-sport event held from 10 to 24 October 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo had been awarded the organization of the 1940 Summer Olympics, but this honor was subsequently passed to Helsinki due to Japan's invasion of China, before ultimately being cancelled due to World War II. Tokyo was chosen as the host city during the 55th IOC Session in West Germany on 26 May 1959.
