Daniel Brustlein
Daniel Brustlein (1904–1996) was an Alsace, Alsatian-born American artist, cartoonist, illustrator, and author of children's books. He is best known for the cartoons and cover art he contributed to ''The New Yorker'' magazine under the pen name "Alain" from the 1930s through the 1950s. The novelist John Updike once said his childhood discovery of Brustlein's cartoons helped to stimulate his desire to write for the magazine and one of Brustlein's cartoons has been repeatedly cited for its skillful and witty self-reference. Although they have not received the same public acclaim as his humorous drawings, his paintings drew strong praise from influential critics such as Hilton Kramer, who said Brustlein's work had great refinement showing "beautiful control over the precise emotion he wants it to convey" and "complete command of color and form handled with a remarkable delicacy and discretion." Henri Alain Liogier
Henri Alain Liogier, also known as Brother Alain (January 31, 1916 – November 9, 2009) was a French botanist, educator, and member of the clergy based out of Texas, United States. Liogier is responsible for over 100 scientific journal articles and over 30 books devoted to the study of botany. He published the quintessential work on the flora of Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and these works are the foundation of botanical science for the Caribbean. During his life's work, he discovered over 300 species of plants all of which can be found at the New York Botanical Garden where he also served as a research associate. He was a founding member of the Academy of Science and first scientific director of the National Botanical Garden in the Dominican Republic. Dr. Liogier was recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for Studies in Plant Science. He was also the director of the Botanic Garden at the University of Puerto Rico. Émile-Auguste Chartier (; 3 March 1868 – 2 June 1951), commonly known as Alain (), was a French philosopher, journalist, essayist, pacifist, and teacher of philosophy. Early life and teaching Alain was born in 1868 in Normandy, in the rural town of Mortagne-au-Perche, the son of a veterinary surgeon. After attending the local Catholic school, in 1881 he entered the ''lycée'' of Alençon, where he passed the examinations of the Baccalaureat in literature (and failed the science Baccalaureat). He proceeded to the ''Lycée Michelet'' in Vanves, a suburb of Paris, where he came under the influence of the philosopher Jules Lagneau. His exceptional intelligence led him to the Ecole Normale Supérieure in 1889, and to the ''agrégation'' in philosophy in 1892.
