State Route 179 (SR 179) is a state highway that serves as a north-south connection between western Etowah County and Boaz. The southern terminus of SR 179 is at its intersection with US 278, and the northern terminus is at its intersection with SR 168 southwest of downtown Boaz. Route description State Route 179 begins at its intersection with US-278 in Howelton. From this point, the route travels in a northerly direction through its northern terminus at SR-168 southwest of Boaz. Boaz, Alabama
Boaz is a city in Marshall and Etowah counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. The Marshall County portion of the city is part of the Albertville Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 10,107. Boaz was known for its outlet shops. History First settled in the 1850s, the town of Boaz was officially founded November 11, 1878, by the Sparks family of Georgia. A post office has been in operation since 1887. The city was named after Boaz, from the Bible. It was incorporated in 1897. Prior to World War II, Boaz hosted a primarily cotton-based economy, only diversifying to livestock and poultry with the pressures of boll weevil infestations and the Great Depression. After the war, Boaz developed a thriving automotive sales industry, which in many instances survives to this day. Etowah County, Alabama
Etowah County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census the population was 103,436. Its county seat is Gadsden. Its name is from a Cherokee word meaning 'edible tree'. In total area, it is the smallest county in Alabama, albeit one of the most densely populated. Etowah County comprises the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The area was split first among neighboring counties, with most of it belonging to DeKalb and Cherokee counties. State Route 168 (SR 168) is a route in the northeastern part of the state. The western terminus of the route is at its junction with SR 75 at Douglas. The eastern terminus of the route is at its junction with SR 68 approximately eight miles northeast of Boaz in southwestern DeKalb County. Route description SR 168 is aligned along a two-lane road for its duration. From its western origin at Douglas in southeastern Marshall County, the route travels eastwardly as it leads towards Boaz. At Boaz, the route turns northeastwardly, crossing US 431 and leading into DeKalb County. The eastern terminus of the route is at Kilpatrick, an unincorporated community near the border of DeKalb and Marshall Counties. SR 168 passes several outlet malls near downtown Boaz. U.S. Route 278 (US 278), mostly internally designated by the Alabama Department of Transportation as State Route 74 (SR 74), is a major east–west U.S. highway across the northern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. West of Hamilton, SR 74 continues west to end at US 78 (unsigned SR 4), while US 278 turns south along US 43/ SR 17/ SR 171 to Guin, where it turns west along SR 118 to the Mississippi state line.
