Marquette Gymnasium
Marquette Gymnasium is a gymnasium on the campus of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, built in 1922. The building was the first full-time home of the Marquette men's basketball team before they moved, originally part-time, to the MECCA Arena. In later years, the building served as a practice facility for the team, as well as the home of the women's basketball and volleyball teams before the completion of the Al McGuire Center. Al McGuire
Alfred James McGuire (September 7, 1928 – January 26, 2001) was an American college basketball coach and broadcaster, the head coach at Marquette University from 1964 to 1977. He won a national championship in his final season at Marquette, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992. He was also well known as a longtime national television basketball broadcaster and for his colorful personality. Early life McGuire played three years of basketball at St. John's Prep, then located in Brooklyn, New York (graduated 1947), and went on to star at St. John's University (1947–1951), where he played for four years and captained the 1951 team that posted a mark and finished third in the NIT. The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) is an annual men's college basketball tournament operated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Since 2023, all rounds of the tournament are played at various sites across the country which are selected annually. From its founding in 1938 to 2022, the semifinals and finals were always played at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City.
