Fort Rouge is a district of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada. Located in the south-central part of the city, it is bounded on the north by the Assiniboine River, on the east and south by the Red River, and on the west by Stafford Street and Pembina Highway. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. The Tim Hortons Brier, or simply (and more commonly) the Brier (''french: Le Brier''), is the annual Canadian men's curling championship, sanctioned by Curling Canada. The current event name refers to its main sponsor, the Tim Hortons coffee and donut shop chain. "Brier" originally referred to a brand of tobacco sold by the event's first sponsor, the Macdonald Tobacco Company. The Brier has been held since 1927, traditionally during the month of March. The winner of the Brier goes on to represent Canada at the World Curling Championships of the same year. 1952 Macdonald Brier
The 1952 Macdonald Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 3 to 8, 1952 at Winnipeg Amphitheatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winnipeg became the first Canadian city outside of Toronto to host a Brier more than once. A total of 12,500 fans attended the event. Team Manitoba, who was skipped by Billy Walsh became the second team to capture the Brier Tankard in their hometown as they finished round robin play unbeaten with a 10–0 record. This was the thirteenth time that Manitoba had won the Brier and the eighth time in which a team finished a Brier undefeated. This would also be the first of two Briers won by Walsh, with his other championship coming in 1956. This was the fifth and most recent Brier in which there were no games that went to an extra end. 1956 Macdonald Brier
The 1956 Macdonald Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 5 to 9, 1956 at Moncton Stadium in Moncton, New Brunswick. A total of 25,800 fans attended the event. Both Team Manitoba and Team Ontario finished tied for first in round robin play with 8-2 records, necessitating a tiebreaker playoff between the two teams. Manitoba, who was skipped by Billy Walsh defeated Ontario in the tiebreaker 8–7 in an extra end to capture the Brier Tankard in what is considered to be one of the greatest Brier finishes of all time. The game would come down to the last rock as Walsh delivered a perfect shot which snuck past the Ontario guard, then knocked the Ontario shot rock out of play while Walsh's rock managed to bite the 12 foot to capture the Brier championship. Billy Walsh (curler)
William James Walsh (January 20, 1917 – October 7, 1971) was a Canadian curler from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Walsh was a two time Canadian champion skip, having won the Brier for Manitoba in 1952 and 1956. Walsh was born in 1917 in Ontario and moved to Winnipeg as an infant. After graduating from high school, he worked at the Comptroller General's office for the Government of Manitoba, where he worked for the rest of his life. He served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles during World War II. Walsh won his first of two national championships at the 1952 Macdonald Brier in Winnipeg. The Walsh rink, which included Al Langlois, Andy McWilliams and John Watson, went undefeated at the event, winning all ten matches. They clinched the event in their second last game, when they beat Alberta's Art Simpson, 9-7.
