Al J. Hayes
Albert John Hayes (February 14, 1900 – August 20, 1981) was an American labor union leader. Born in Milwaukee, Hayes completed an apprenticeship as a machinist in the railroad shops. In 1917, he joined the International Association of Machinists. He rose to become president of his union local, then in 1934 began working full-time as a representative for the Grand Lodge. Hayes served on the Chicago War Labor Board during World War II. In 1945, he was elected as a vice-president of the union, and then in 1949 as its president. As leader of the union, he convinced it to reaffiliate to the American Federation of Labor (AFL). He proposed that arbitration should be compulsory in labor disputes, something opposed by many labor unionists. Under his leadership, the union's membership grew from 672,000 to just under 900,000. Maurice Hutcheson
Maurice Albert Hutcheson (May 7, 1897 – January 9, 1983) was a carpenter and an American labor leader. He was president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America from 1952 to 1972. He was nicknamed "Maurice the Silent" for his taciturn nature and ability to sit silently through long meetings or heated debates. Early life He was born in Saginaw County, Michigan, to William Hutcheson and his wife Bessie Mae (King). He was educated in public schools. The Hutcheson family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1913 when William Hutcheson (his father) was elected president of the Carpenters' union. The younger Hutcheson apprenticed as a carpenter in 1914 and served in the United States Navy in World War I. After the war, he returned to carpentry. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is an AFL–CIO/ CLC trade union representing approx. 646,933 workers as of 2006 in more than 200 industries with most of its membership in the United States and Canada. Origin On May 5, 1888, Thomas W. Talbot, a railroad machinist in Atlanta, Georgia, founded the Order of United Machinists and Mechanical Engineers. Talbot and 18 others had been members in the Knights of Labor. Talbot believed that a union needed to be formed for railroad machinists that would resist wage cuts. He wanted to provide insurance against unemployment, illness, and accidents but also wanted railroad machinists to be recognized for their craft skill. Unlike the Knights of Labor, who accepted everyone, Talbot's union accepted only white U.S. citizens, preferably native-born.
