Al-Shajara, Palestine
Al-Shajara () was a Palestinian Arab village depopulated by Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War when its residents were forcefully evacuated and became refugees. It was located 14 kilometers west of Tiberias on the main highway to Nazareth near the villages of Lubya and Hittin. The village was very close to the city of Nazareth, about 5 kilometers away. The village was the fourth largest by area in Tiberias district. Its economy was based on agriculture. In 1944/45 it had 2,102 dunams (505 acres) planted with cereals and 544 dunams (136 acres) either irrigated or fig and olive orchards. Al-Shajara was the home village of the cartoonist Naji al-Ali. Al-Shajara (, also spelled ''ash-Shajarah'') is a town in southern Syria, administratively part of the Daraa Governorate, located west of Daraa, in between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and Jordan. Nearby localities include Saham al-Jawlan to the east, Nafia to the north, Jamla to the northwest and Beit Ara to the southwest. The village center has an elevation of above sea level. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (Syria), Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, al-Shajara had a population of 6,567 in the 2004 census. It is the administrative center of the al-Shajara ''nahiyah'' (subdistrict) which consisted of 17 localities with a combined population of 34,206 in 2004. Al-Shajara, Jordan
Al-Shajara is a Jordanian town near the Syrian border. The population was 27,902 at the 2015 Census, 14,628 being male and 13,274 being female. The town and it is known for its crops and olives oil. History In 1596 it appeared in the Ottoman tax registers named as ''Sajara'', situated in the ''nahiya'' (subdistrict) of Bani Juhma, part of the Sanjak of Hawran. It had 53 households and 21 bachelors; all Muslim. The villagers paid a fixed tax-rate of 25% on agricultural products; including wheat, barley, summer crops, goats and bee-hives, in addition to occasional revenues.
