Akeno Observatory
Akeno Observatory is a cosmic ray observatory located in Akeno, a town in Yamanashi prefecture, Japan. The observatory is run by the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR), based at the University of Tokyo. Akeno Observatory features AGASA, the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array, which studies the origins of very high energy cosmic rays. Construction of the observatory began in 1975, and in 1977 it became the second attached institution with ICRR. Its accomplishments include the observation of a super high energy cosmic ray air shower in 1995 that was previously thought to be impossible. Cosmic-ray Observatory
A cosmic-ray observatory is a scientific installation built to detect high-energy-particles coming from space called cosmic rays. This typically includes photons (high-energy light), electrons, protons, and some heavier nuclei, as well as antimatter particles. About 90% of cosmic rays are protons, 9% are alpha particles, and the remaining ~1% are other particles. It is not yet possible to build image forming optics for cosmic rays, like a Wolter telescope for lower energy X-rays, although some cosmic-ray observatories also look for high energy gamma rays and x-rays. Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHEC) pose further detection problems. One way of learning about cosmic rays is using different detectors to observe aspects of a cosmic ray air shower. Akeno, Yamanashi
was a village located in Kitakoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. Akeno Giant Air Shower Array
The Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA) is a very large surface array designed to study the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. Located in the town of Akeno in Yamanashi prefecture, Japan, it covers an area of 100 km2 and consists of 111 surface detectors and 27 muon detectors. Array experiments such as this one are used to detect air shower particles. The array is operated by the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, University of Tokyo at the Akeno Observatory. Results The results from AGASA were used to calculate the energy spectrum and anisotropy of cosmic rays. Cosmic Ray
Cosmic rays are high-energy particles or clusters of particles (primarily represented by protons or atomic nuclei) that move through space at nearly the speed of light. They originate from the Sun, from outside of the Solar System in our own galaxy, and from distant galaxies. Upon impact with Earth's atmosphere, cosmic rays produce showers of secondary particles, some of which reach the surface, although the bulk is deflected off into space by the magnetosphere or the heliosphere. Air Shower (physics)
An air shower is an extensive (many kilometres wide) cascade of ionized particles and electromagnetic radiation produced in the atmosphere when a ''primary'' cosmic ray (i.e. one of extraterrestrial origin) enters the atmosphere. When a particle, which could be a proton, a nucleus, an electron, a photon, or (rarely) a positron, strikes an atom's nucleus in the air it produces many energetic hadrons. The unstable hadrons decay in the air speedily into other particles and electromagnetic radiation, which are part of the particle shower components. The secondary radiation rains down, including x-rays, muons, protons, antiprotons, alpha particles, pions, electrons, positrons, and neutrons.
