Aix-en-Provence Argonautes
The Aix-en-Provence Argonautes are a French American football team based in Aix-en-Provence. The team plays in Ligue Élite de Football Américain and in BIG6 European Football League. History The team was established in 1986. In their second year, the Argonautes won the title in the second division in France. In 1989 they had their first appearance in the French final which they lost to Paris Castors. The following three years the Argonautes won their first three national championships. From 1989 to 2004 they made it always to the final, in this 16 consecutive the became 8 times French Champions. Their last appearance in the final was in 2006. Six years later the Argonautes have been relegated to the second division. In 2014 Aix won again the second division title and was promoted to first division. The Championnat Élite Division 1 () is the top-level American football league of France. The league was founded in 1982. History American football was introduced to France in the early 20th century, but for decades it remained an infrequent activity, practised only by American touring teams and wartime servicemen. The formation of NATO in 1949 allowed for U.S. military settlements in France, and in turn the establishment of senior and high school teams representing these bases. The BIG6 European Football League (BIG6) was a European Cup style tournament for European American football teams. Originally organized by the EFAF (European Federation of American Football), the tournament had been run by the German Football League International since 2015. The final game of the BIG6 was called the Eurobowl, which had been held annually since 1986. Its last season was in 2018. The European Football League (EFL) established in 1986, was a tournament for the best European American football teams affiliated to IFAF (International Federation of American Football - Europe), which replaced the European Federation of American Football (EFAF) in 2014.
