Aish Tor
Aish Tor is a small Tor (rock formation), tor above the northern side of the Dart Gorge in Dartmoor, Devon, England, that is accessed by Dr. Blackall's Drive from Newbridge Hill. It stands at above sea level and is topped by a small cairn. The actual 'tor' is small and flat and generally hard to pin-point. Dartmoor
Dartmoor is an upland area in southern Devon, South West England. The moorland and surrounding land has been protected by National Park status since 1951. Dartmoor National Park covers . The granite that forms the uplands dates from the Carboniferous Period of geological history. The landscape consists of moorland capped with many exposed granite hilltops known as tors, providing habitats for wildlife. The highest point is High Willhays, above sea level. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeological artefacts. Dartmoor National Park is managed by the Dartmoor National Park Authority, whose 22 members are drawn from Devon County Council, local district councils and Government. The Ordnance Survey (OS) is the national mapping agency for Great Britain. A tor, which is also known by geomorphologists as either a castle koppie or kopje, is a large, free-standing rock (geology), rock outcrop that rises abruptly from the surrounding smooth and gentle slopes of a rounded hill summit or ridge crest. Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural or cultural values. Protected areas are those areas in which human presence or the exploitation of natural resources (e.g. firewood, non-timber forest products, water, ...) is limited.
