Air (French Band)
Air is a French music duo from Versailles, consisting of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel. Their critically acclaimed debut album, '' Moon Safari'', including the track " Sexy Boy", was an international success in 1998. Its follow-up, '' The Virgin Suicides'', was the score to Sofia Coppola's first film ''The Virgin Suicides''. The band has since released the albums '' 10 000 Hz Legend'', '' Talkie Walkie'', '' Pocket Symphony'', '' Love 2'', '' Le voyage dans la lune'' and '' Music for Museum''. The band is influenced by a wide variety of musical styles and artists. History Formation Nicolas Godin studied architecture at the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Versailles, and Jean-Benoît Dunckel studied mathematics, before forming a band in 1995. ''10 000 Hz Legend'' is the second studio album by French electronic music duo Air, released in France on 28 May 2001 by Virgin Records and in the United States on 29 May 2001 by Astralwerks. On this album, tracks are longer and more electronic-oriented than on their previous records. These experimentations find the duo expanding their capacities and working with other artists including Beck and suGar Yoshinaga of Buffalo Daughter. The album artwork was produced by Ito Morabito. It features Monument Valley, located on the Arizona–Utah border. Critical reception ''10 000 Hz Legend'' received generally less favourable reviews from critics than had their previous albums; however, '' Q'' listed ''10 000 Hz Legend'' as one of the 50 best albums of 2001. Brian Reitzell
Brian Reitzell (born December 24, 1965) is an American musician, composer, record producer and music supervisor best known for his work on many film and TV soundtracks. He is notable for working extensively with the American film director Sofia Coppola ('' The Virgin Suicides'', '' Lost in Translation'', ''Marie Antoinette'', '' The Bling Ring''). He was formerly the drummer for the LA punk band Redd Kross. He has collaborated extensively with the French electronica duo Air, having performed drums on their albums '' The Virgin Suicides'' and '' 10 000 Hz Legend''. Reitzell also toured with the band on their "Moon Safari" tour in 1998 and again in 2000 and 2001. In 2003, he was nominated for a BAFTA, along with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, for the score to ''Lost in Translation''. Redd Kross
Redd Kross is an American Rock music, rock band from Hawthorne, California, who had their roots in 1978 in a punk rock band called the Tourists, which was started by brothers Jeff and Steven Shane McDonald, Steve McDonald while Steve was still in middle school. With the addition of friends Greg Hetson and John Stielow on drums, the band's first gig was opening for Black Flag (band), Black Flag. The band has since released eight albums and three EPs. Career Red Cross In April 1979, the band had their first practice in the living room of original drummer, John Stielow's parent's home. ''A Trip to the Moon'' ( , ) is a 1902 French science-fiction adventure trick film written, directed, and produced by Georges Méliès. Inspired by the Jules Verne novel ''From the Earth to the Moon'' (1865) and its sequel '' Around the Moon'' (1870), the film follows a group of astronomers who travel to the Moon in a cannon-propelled capsule, explore the Moon's surface, escape from an underground group of Selenites (lunar inhabitants), and return to Earth with a captive Selenite. Méliès leads an ensemble cast of French theatrical performers as the main character Professor Barbenfouillis. Although the film disappeared into obscurity (after Méliès's retirement from the film industry) it was rediscovered around 1930, when Méliès's importance to the history of cinema was beginning to be recognised by film devotees. Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès ( , ; 8 December 1861 – 21 January 1938) was a French magic (illusion), magician, toymaker, actor, and filmmaker. He led many technical and narrative developments in the early days of film, cinema, primarily in the Fantasy film, fantasy and Science fiction film, science fiction genres. Étienne De Crécy
Étienne Bernard Marie de Crécy (, born 25 February 1969, Lyon, France), also known as Superdiscount, EDC, Minos Pour Main Basse (Sur La Ville) and Mooloodjee, is a French DJ and producer who composes electronic music, primarily house. Biography Crécy was born in Lyon, but moved to Versailles from Marseille in the mid-1980s, attending the same Jules Ferry college as Air and Alex Gopher, with whom he later created the Solid label. Alex Gopher
Alexis Latrobe (), known professionally as Alex Gopher, is a French mastering engineer, electronic musician and producer. He worked as a sound engineer at Translab Studio, notably for Angèle, Clara Luciani, Lomepal, -M-, Mr. Oizo, Gesaffelstein and Etienne Daho. Latrobe has contributed a great amount to the French touch movement of the 1990s. Career Latrobe began his musical career playing bass in the band Orange with future Air members Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin. After the group split, he began to create electronic music and embarked on a successful solo career. Latrobe's musical style mainly consists of sampling, along with recruiting vocal talent. ''Le voyage dans la lune'' () is the sixth studio album by French electronic music duo Air, released on 6 February 2012 by Virgin Records. Background and release The album is inspired by the 1902 silent science fiction film ''A Trip to the Moon'' (''Le voyage dans la lune'') by Georges Méliès and is intended to be a soundtrack to the restored version of the film. A free three-minute film excerpt featuring the song "Sonic Armada" was made available for one week in early December 2011 in conjunction with a pre-order offer. A limited edition of the album (70,000 copies worldwide) includes the CD and a DVD of the film. The digital version of the album, along with the newly restored and colourised 16-minute film, was released as a strictly limited edition.
