Ahtanum State Forest
Ahtanum State Forest is a working forest and recreation area located in Yakima County, Washington. It covers approximately and lies west of the city of Yakima, Washington, Yakima. The forest borders the Yakama Indian Reservation to the south, and the name Ahtanum means “stream by long mountain” in the Yakama language. History The land comprising Ahtanum State Forest had previously been a Checkerboarding (land), checkerboard of public and private land. In 2005, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) traded of scattered land elsewhere for of this private forest owned by two companies, Plum Creek Timber and Elk Haven Tree Farms. This "blocking up" allowed DNR to consolidate ownership of of land in order to create Ahtanum State Forest. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) paid for $50,000 worth of appraisals to help complete the land exchange after DNR ran out of money until the next funding cycle. Yakama Indian Reservation
The Yakama Indian Reservation (spelled Yakima until 1994) is a Native American reservation in Washington state of the federally recognized tribe known as the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. The tribe is made up of Klikitat, Palus, Wallawalla, Wanapam, Wenatchi, Wishram, and Yakama peoples. Geography The reservation is located on the east side of the Cascade Mountains in southern Washington state. The eastern portion of Mount Adams lies within this territory. Yakama
The Yakama are a Native American tribe with nearly 10,851 members, based primarily in eastern Washington state. Yakama people today are enrolled in the federally recognized tribe, the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. Checkerboarding (land)
Checkerboarding refers to a situation where land ownership is intermingled between two or more owners, resulting in a checkerboard pattern. Checkerboarding is prevalent in the Western United States and Western Canada because of extensive use in railroad grants for western expansion, although it had its beginnings in the canal land grant era. Railroad grants Checkerboarding in the West occurred as a result of railroad land grants where railroads would be granted every other section along a rail corridor. These grants, which typically extended from either side of the track, were a subsidy to the railroads. Unlike per-mile subsidies which encouraged fast but shoddy track-laying, land grants encouraged higher quality work, since the railroads could increase the value of the land by building better track. Plum Creek Timber
Plum Creek Timber Company, Inc. was a timberland owner and manager, as well as a forest products, mineral extraction, and property development company, until it merged with Weyerhaeuser Company. It was headquartered in Suite 3100 at 601 Union Street in Seattle. Plum Creek was spun off from Burlington Resources as a master limited partnership (MLP) on June 8, 1989. Burlington Resources was created from the Burlington Northern railroad's natural resources holdings in 1988.
