Ahrentsklint
The Ahrensklint or Ahrentsklint (also called the Ahrentsklintklippe) in the Harz Mountains is a granite rock formation, , on the Erdbeerkopf in Harz district in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Geographic location The ''Ahrentsklint'' lies in the Upper Harz (High Harz) inside the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park in the Harz National Park. It is located north of the village of Schierke (part of Wernigerode) about 800 metres west of the Erdbeerkopf mountain () on the southwestern flank of the Hohnekamm (). The Cold Bode flows through Schierke past the southwestern flanks of the mountain on the far side of the Brocken Railway that runs up its side. Brocken Railway
The Brocken Railway (german: Brockenbahn) is one of three tourist metre gauge railways which together with the Harz Railway and Selke Valley Railway form the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways railway network in the Harz mountain range of Germany. It runs from the station of Drei Annen Hohne at , where it joins the Harz Railway, via Schierke and the Bode River valley to the summit of the Brocken the highest mountain of the Harz at and part of the Harz National Park. Route The Brocken Railway leaves Drei Annen Hohne station (), like the Harz Railway, in a southwesterly direction. As it leaves the station, however, it crosses the road to Schierke/Elend and then enters the Harz National Park. It then heads west to Schierke station (688 m), where until 1963, there was a siding to Knaupsholz granite quarry at about the half-way point. Goethe Way
Goethe Way (german: Goetheweg) is the name given to a number of footpaths or trails that run through various regions in Germany and the Alps (e.g. through the Harz mountains, Thuringian Forest, Alps) as well as a railway station ( Goetheweg station) on the Brocken Railway. They are all named after the German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Harz Torfhaus–Brocken * Length: ca. 8 km * Lowest point: 800 m (Torfhaus) * Highest point: 1,141.1 m (Brocken) The Goethe Way is one of the most frequented hiking trails in the Harz National Park. Harz Witches' Trail
The Harz Witches' Trail (german: Harzer Hexenstieg) is a footpath, just under 100 km long, in Germany that runs from Osterode through the Harz mountains and over its highest peak, the Brocken, to Thale. It is a project by the Harz Transport Association and Harz Club and is part of the system of trails known as the '' Harzer Wandernadel''. Footpath The trail runs from Osterode via Lerbach to Buntenbock, which is in the borough of Clausthal-Zellerfeld and surrounded by the Upper Harz Ponds. The ponds are part of a cultural monument to the former mining industry of the Harz, known as the Upper Harz Water Regale and to which the Dyke Ditch belongs. Following the Dyke Ditch, the path passes the Dam House as well as the Grabenhaus Rose which belongs to the town of Altenau. Themed Walk
A themed walk is a walk along which there are information boards covering a specific topic or theme, such as regional history, industrial history, mining or forestry. Features of nature (e.g. raised bogs or biotopes) or of geology are often laid out as special educational paths. Municipal authorities or local societies are usually responsible for their establishment and maintenance. The paths are usually several kilometres long and are used both for educational purposes and recreation. They may connect places, buildings or natural features that have a particular theme in common by a signed route, but may also have specifically positioned exhibits. Whilst themed walks are often designed to encourage walking, educational paths and nature trail tend to be aimed more at educating or training. In Austria there are more than 300 themed walks. Harzer Wandernadel
The Harzer Wandernadel is a system of hiking awards in the Harz mountains in central Germany. The hiker (or mountain biker) can earn awards at different levels of challenge by walking to the various checkpoints in the network and stamping his or her passbook to record the visit. With 222 checkpoints in three federal states and across five districts in the Harz and with membership in five figures, the system has gained a following Germany-wide. Purpose The idea of the ''Wandernadel'' (literally "hiking needle/pin" --> "hiking badge") is to give those holidaying in the Harz a worthwhile goal to achieve and encourage them to stay for longer or return. It also aims to encourage those who live in the local area to go hiking and improve their fitness. In addition the system helps tourists and locals to get to know the many different sights and hiking trails in the Harz. Trudenstein
The Trudenstein is a rock formation and popular hiker's destination in the Harz Mountains of central Germany. It is located in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. Location and surrounding area The Trudenstein lies beside the Glashütten Way on the wooded southern slopes of the Hohnekopf ridge about two kilometres northeast of the village of Schierke in the Harz National Park. Two kilometres to the east, is the village of Drei Annen Hohne that, like Schierke, is part of the borough of Wernigerode. The Brocken Railway, an important heritage line, runs past the rocks immediately to the south, below a granite quarry. Drei Annen Hohne
Drei Annen Hohne is the name of a small settlement within the municipal area of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The place is located about southwest of the town within the Harz mountains, on the northeastern edge of the Harz National Park. It is accessible from the road from Wernigerode to Schierke, an eastern branch–off leads to Elbingerode. Drei Annen Hohne is also a stop on the narrow gauge Harz Railway line from Wernigerode to Nordhausen, as well as of the Brocken Railway, which branches off south of the station. Wurmberg is a municipality in the district of Enz in Baden-Württemberg in Germany. Geography Wurmberg is located on the so-called Platte, a Karst mountain range in the northern Black Forest (Schwarzwald). Municipality The municipality Wurmberg includes the districts Wurmberg and Neubärental. Wurmberg was a settlement of the Waldensians from Lucerne. History Wurmberg was first mentioned in documents in 1221 as a chapel was built at that time. In the following period, the Maulbronn Monastery secured the rule of Wurmberg. The monastery of Wurmberg came into Württemberg in 1504 following the Bavarian-Palatine War of Succession. Brocken
The Brocken, also sometimes referred to as the Blocksberg, is the highest peak in the Harz mountain range and also the highest peak in Northern Germany; it is near Schierke in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt between the rivers Weser and Elbe. Although its elevation of is below alpine dimensions, its microclimate resembles that of mountains of about . The peak above the tree line tends to have a snow cover from September to May, and mists and fogs shroud it up to 300 days of the year. The mean annual temperature is only . Count Of Stolberg Wernigerode
The County of Stolberg-Wernigerode (german: Grafschaft Stolberg-Wernigerode) was a county of the Holy Roman Empire located in the Harz region around Wernigerode, now part of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was ruled by a branch of the House of Stolberg. History The Counts of Wernigerode had become extinct in 1429 and their lands were inherited through Salic law by the Counts of Stolberg, sovereign counts of the Empire since the early 11th century. On 31 May 1645, the Harz line of Stolberg-Stolberg was divided between a senior Stolberg-Wernigerode line and a junior Stolberg-Stolberg line. Because Wernigerode was heavily damaged by the Thirty Years' War, the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode also resided in the castle of Ilsenburg. The town of Gedern in Hesse, acquired in 1535, became the seat of the cadet branch of Stolberg-Gedern in 1677.
