Ahr () is a river in Germany, a left tributary of the Rhine. Its source is at an elevation of approximately above sea level in Blankenheim in the Eifel, in the cellar of a timber-frame house near the castle of Blankenheim. After it crosses from North Rhine-Westphalia into Rhineland-Palatinate. The Ahr flows through Ahr valley or ''Ahrtal'', passing through the towns of Schuld, Altenahr and Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The Bundesstraße 258 is a German federal highway. It starts in Aachen, crosses the Eifel from northwest to southeast and ends in Mayen. From Aachen, the road first runs south along the Belgian border. One curiosity on this part is a 3 km long strip at Roetgen where the German federal highway leads through Belgian territory. This strip has no connection to the Belgian road network, and the only notice of the border crossing is a small sign reading ''Belgien'' (''Belgium'' in German). There is one house along this strip of road, which has a Belgian post code, but is connected to the German telephone network. After that, the road runs through Monschau and Schleiden. From Blankenheim the road follows the river Ahr downstream until it leaves the river at Müsch. The road then passes the Nürburgring and reaches its end south of Mayen. Blankenheim Castle
Blankenheim Castle () is a ''schloss'' above the village of Blankenheim (Ahr), Blankenheim in the Eifel mountains of Germany. It was built as a hill castle around 1115 by Gerhard I and became the family seat of the House of Blankenheim. The lords of Blankenheim were elevated to the countship in 1380. The counts were related to the counts of Manderscheid and, from 1469, were named Manderscheid-Blankenheim. With the extinction of the lines of Manderscheid-Gerolstein and Manderscheid-Kail (1742) the County of Manderscheid became the largest independent territorial lordship in the Eifel.
