Ahmed Sheikh Nabhany
Ahmed Sheikh Nabhany (27 November 1927 – 23 February 2017) was a Kenyan academic scholar, poet, lexicologist, historian and professor often regarded as the father of modern Swahili poetry. He was the recipient of The Order of the Grand Warrior (O.G.W). Early life and education Nabhany was born on 27 November 1927, in Matondoni, Lamu County, Kenya. He was raised by the grandmother, Amina Abubakar Sheikh because his parents died at his tender age. Nabhany started writing and self composing poems at 12, taught by his grandmother who was also a poet. He attended a local Islamic school at Riyadha Mosque in Lamu where he studied Islam. Nabhany was a self taught scholar whose contributions had focused on Swahili culture. While in Mombasa, he also attended evening classes in English as well as learnt Arabic language. Matondoni
The Coast Province () was one of Kenya's eight Provinces of Kenya, provinces prior to 2010. It covered the entire country's coastline on the Indian Ocean. Its capital city was Mombasa. It was inhabited by the Mijikenda peoples, Mijikenda and Swahili people, Swahili peoples, among others. The province covered an area of 79,686.1 km2. Tourist attraction Some of the province's important towns included Kilifi, Malindi, Watamu and Lamu in the north, and Mwandimu and Magunda in the south. Heinemann (publisher)
William Heinemann Ltd., with the imprint Heinemann, was a London-based publisher founded in 1890 by William Heinemann. Their first published book, 1890's ''The Bondman'', was a huge success in the United Kingdom and launched the company. He was joined in 1893 by Sydney Pawling. Heinemann died in 1920 and Pawling sold the company to Doubleday, having worked with them in the past to publish their works in the United States. Pawling died in 1922 and new management took over. Doubleday sold his interest in 1933. Through the 1920s, the company was well known for publishing works by famous authors that had previously been published as serials. Among these were works by H. G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling, W. Somerset Maugham, George Moore, Max Beerbohm and Henry James, among others. East African Publishing House
The East African Publishing House (EAPH) was a publishing company established in Nairobi in 1965. It was the first indigenous publishing firm in East Africa. History The East African Institute of Social and Cultural Affairs started to consider the possibility of starting a new publishing firm in 1964. They approached André Deutsch, who had previously published Tom Mboya's ''Freedom and After'' and been involved in a publishers called African Universities Press. Deutsch and the Institute cofounded East African Publishing House in 1965. Initially, Deutsch owned 49 percent of the company, but editorial disagreement over the kind of books to publish led to his withdrawal in 1966. The ''Daily Nation'' is a Kenyan newspaper. It was founded in 1958 and is published in Nairobi. History The ''Daily Nation'' was started in the year 1958 as a Swahili weekly called ''Taifa'' by the Englishman Charles Hayes.
