Aguilar is a List of municipalities in Colorado#Statutory town, statutory town located in Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 456 at the 2020 United States census. Cattleman and prominent pioneer José Ramón Aguilar founded the town in 1894. History In 1864, a trading post called San Antonio Plaza was created by Agapito Ribali (sometimes misspelled as Rivali or Ruballi) at the current site of the town. The San Antonio post office was established in 1875, and at some point the settlement was renamed to Schultz Plaza after William Schultz, builder of the first store in the settlement. In 1879, J. Ramón Aguilar came to the area and bought the land in and around the settlement. The Aguilar, Colorado, post office opened on December 16, 1890, and the Town of Aguilar was incorporated on January 18, 1894, named after the owner of the land. Félix Aguilar Observatory ( ; OAFA) is an astronomical observatory established in 1953, in San Juan Province, Argentina. In 1974, it was renamed to Carlos Ulrrico Cesco Astronomical Station ( ; EACUC). Its primary observing facility is located in El Leoncito National Park in the west of San Juan Province. Also located in El Leoncito Park is the Leoncito Astronomical Complex. The observatory is operated by the School of Physical and Natural Sciences at the National University of San Juan in San Juan, Argentina. The original OAFA observatory buildings are located at the west end of the city. OAFA is named after Félix Aguilar (1884–1943), an Argentine astronomer and engineer who was director of the La Plata Astronomical Observatory from 1919 to 1921, and again from 1934 until his death. The Château d'Aguilar (Languedocien: ''Castèl d’Aguilar'') is a 12th-century castle, one of the so-called Cathar castles, located in the '' commune'' of Tuchan in the Aude ''département'' of France. Architecture The design of the castle is an example of the practical military thinking guiding the 12th century architecture. The castle consists of an inner keep built in the 12th century, surrounded by an outer pentagonal fortification from the 13th century. This fortification is oriented such that its point guards the side most favourable to attackers. The keep and the inner hexagonal fortification is flanked at each corner with semi-circular guard towers, each equipped with archery outlooks. The strategic location of the castle on a hill overhanging the plain of Tuchan allows control and protection of the Corbières Massif.
