Agnew Depot
Agnew station is a former railway station in Santa Clara County, California, in what is now the city of Santa Clara. The station was built in 1877 and originally served the narrow-gauge South Pacific Coast Railroad. Landowner Abram Agnew donated to the railroad to build a station and laid out the settlement that would become known as Agnew's Village. (The station was similarly referred to as Agnew's.) South Pacific Coast Railroad
The South Pacific Coast Railroad (SPC) was a narrow gauge steam railroad running between Santa Cruz, California and Alameda, with a ferry connection in Alameda to San Francisco. The railroad was created as the Santa Clara Valley Railroad, founded by local strawberry growers as a way to get their crops to market in San Francisco and provide an alternative to the Southern Pacific Railroad. Agnew's Village, California
Agnew's Village (or Agnew) was a small unincorporated village in what is now Santa Clara, California. It was named for Abram Agnew, a Santa Clara Valley pioneer from Ohio who settled there around 1873. Agnew donated of land for a South Pacific Coast Railroad station and laid out the town, causing the station and town to be referred to as "Agnew's". The railroad depot is still standing. Agnew's land appears on 1877 maps, opposite Lick Mill, a paper mill operated by James Lick. Agnew's Village was annexed into Santa Clara in the mid 1980s. The Agnew name lives on in Agnew Park in Santa Clara, as well as Agnews Developmental Center, the western campus of which was located in Agnew's Village.
