Agnes Crane
Agnes Crane (June 1852September 1932) was an English paleontologist, who published a number of articles on fossil and recent brachiopods, described a new brachiopod species, and presented her work internationally. Early life Agnes Crane was born in June 1852 in Thorney, near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. She was the only child of Edward Crane and Jane Turnell. Crane lived in Thorney until 1866, when her father retired. They settled in Brighton in 1867, after travelling around Europe. Crane lived in Brighton for the rest of her life. Edward Crane was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London in 1872, and became involved with the Brighton Museum in the 1870s, first assisting with the geological gallery, and later as a member and then chair of the museum committee. Thorney, Cambridgeshire
Thorney is a village in the Peterborough unitary authority in the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire, England. Located around east of Peterborough city centre, on the A47. Historically in the Isle of Ely, Thorney was transferred to the short-lived county of Huntingdon and Peterborough in 1965 and became part of the Peterborough district in 1974, on the merger into Cambridgeshire; the city became a unitary authority area in 1998. History Thorney began as a Saxon settlement in about 500 AD. The existence of Thorney Abbey made the settlement an important ecclesiastical centre, and until 2014 was the most northerly point of the Anglican Diocese of Ely. By 2007 the previous Thorney Abbey church, now the Church of St Mary and St Botolph, was part of the Deanery and Diocese of Peterborough. John Brazier
John William Brazier (23 September 1842 – 20 August 1930) was a malacologist from Australia. Early life He was born to Captain John Brazier and his wife Mary nee McMillan. His father commanded whaling vessels out of Sydney, Australia, and during his voyages he collected sea shells as a hobby. His son, John junior, accompanied him to sea on at least one of those voyages and he too became interested in collecting sea shells. Professional life In 1865 John Brazier junior accompanied Julius Brenchley on the voyage of H.M.S. Curacoa to Norfolk Island, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, the New Hebrides, the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia. After several other shell collecting expeditions in Australasia he joined William John Macleay 's 1875 expedition in the Chevert to New Guinea via the Great Barrier Reef.
