Agathangjel Çamçe
Bishop Agathangjel (secular name Vangjel Çamçe; 1877–1946) was an Albanian Orthodox cleric and important figure of the early Albanian Orthodox Church. He was a staunch supporter of the autocephaly of Albanian Orthodoxy and a close collaborate of Fan Noli, founding father of the Albanian Orthodox Church. He was metropolitan bishop of Berat and was a member of the Holy Synod of the Albanian Orthodox Church. He was born in the city of Korça in 1877. In 1913 he emigrated to the United States, where he distinguished himself as an activist of the Albanian National Movement. In 1919 he was ordained a priest in New York, where he served for two years preaching to Eastern Orthodox Albanians in the Albanian language. While in America, in the same year he laid the foundations of Saint Mary’s Orthodox Church in Natick, Massachusetts, one of the centers of the Albanian diaspora and its patriotic movement. Theofan Stilian Noli, known as Fan Noli (6 January 1882 – 13 March 1965), was an Albanian Americans, Albanian-American writer, scholar, diplomat, politician, historian, orator, bishop, and founder of the Albanian Orthodox Church and the Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America who served as List of Prime Ministers of Albania, Prime Minister and regent of Principality of Albania, Albania in 1924 during the June Revolution. Autocephaly
Autocephaly (; ) is the status of a hierarchical Christian church whose head bishop does not report to any higher-ranking bishop. The term is primarily used in Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches. The status has been compared with that of the churches (provinces) within the Anglican Communion. Congress Of Berat
The Congress of Berat, also known as the Albanian Orthodox Congress, was a meeting held on 13 September 1922, in Berat, Albania, among Albanian Orthodox faithful. The congress decided the autocephaly of the Church of Albania. According to the decisions of the Congress, religious services could be held in the Albanian language.
