Afua Hirsch (born 1981) is a British writer and broadcaster. She has worked as a journalist for ''The Guardian'' newspaper, and was the Social Affairs and Education Editor for Sky News from 2014 until 2017. Early life Afua Hirsch was born in Stavanger, Norway, to a British father and an Akan mother from Ghana, and was raised in Wimbledon, southwest London. Her paternal grandfather, Hans (later John), who was Jewish, had fled Berlin in 1938. Her great-uncle is the metallurgist, Sir Peter Hirsch. Afua Kobi (fl. 1834–1884) was an ''asantehemaa'' of the Ashanti Empire. Afua Kobi, an Asante ruler in the Asante Kingdom in present day Ghana, was an "''asantehemaa"'', that refers to a "queen mother". She informed the Asante royal council to avoid the war with British in the 19th century, but was active in the ensuing war.
