Afrodiziak (artist)
Afrodiziak was a British singing group composed of Caron Wheeler, Claudia Fontaine, and later Naomi Thompson, that was active in the 1980s. As a duo, Wheeler and Fontaine were best known for performing backing vocals on the Jam's final single "Beat Surrender" in 1982 (on whose final tour they performed) and Elvis Costello's 1983 album ''Punch the Clock'', especially its lead single, the international hit " Everyday I Write the Book". After the addition of Naomi Thompson as a third member, Afrodiziak performed backing vocals on the hit single "Free Nelson Mandela", including the a cappella intro, staging it on Channel 4's music show '' The Tube'' in March 1984. Heaven 17's 1984 album ''How Men Are'' featured them prominently, especially on the singles "Sunset Now" and "And That's No Lie". Samantha Brown (born 7 October 1964) is an English singer, musician and songwriter. Brown is a blue-eyed soul and jazz singer, and ukulele and piano player. She came to prominence in the late 1980s as a solo artist, and released six singles that entered the UK Singles Chart during the 1980s and 1990s. Her solo singles, sometimes dealing with lost love, include " Stop!", " This Feeling", " Can I Get a Witness", " Kissing Gate", "With a Little Love" and "Just Good Friends". Aswad are a British reggae group, noted for adding strong R&B and soul influences to the reggae sound. They have been performing since the mid-1970s, having released a total of 21 albums. Their UK hit singles include the number one " Don't Turn Around" (1988) and "Shine" (1994). "Aswad" is Arabic for "black". They are three-time Grammy Award nominees. Max Alfred "Maxi" Elliott (born 10 June 1961), known by his stage name Maxi Priest, is a British reggae vocalist of Jamaican descent. He is best known for singing reggae music with an R&B influence, otherwise known as reggae fusion. He was one of the first international artists to have success in this genre, and one of the most successful reggae fusion acts of all time. Ian Gillan
Ian Gillan (born 19 August 1945) is a British singer who is best known as the lead singer and lyricist for the rock band Deep Purple. He is known for his powerful and wide-ranging singing voice. Initially influenced by Elvis Presley, Gillan started and fronted several local bands in the mid-1960s, and eventually joined Episode Six when their original singer left. He first found widespread commercial success after joining Deep Purple in 1969. He resigned from the band in June 1973, having given a lengthy notice period to their managers. Japan were an English new wave band formed in 1974 in Catford, South London by David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steve Jansen (drums) and Mick Karn (bass guitar), joined by Richard Barbieri (keyboards) and Rob Dean (lead guitar) the following year. "Life in One Day" is the third single from Howard Jones' 1985 album '' Dream Into Action''. It is an uptempo number, which lyrically warns against wishing one's life away. It reached number 14 in the UK Singles Chart, and number 19 on the United States ''Billboard'' Hot 100. The 12" version features a pair of remixes of the lead track which were more obviously different in structure from the original than was the norm on Jones' previous releases. Part One is a vocal mix, and Part Two a largely instrumental dub mix. The UK B-side, "Boom Bap Respite", a piano instrumental, was not included in the US release. Things Can Only Get Better (Howard Jones Song)
"Things Can Only Get Better" was released as the first single from Howard Jones' 1985 album '' Dream into Action''. Background A typically upbeat Jones composition, it was one of two songs from the album to feature all-female singing group Afrodiziak on backing vocals. John Leland from ''Spin'' magazine wrote that "It mines the best of the Anglo soul movement: a clean slap-bass line, precise horns and synths, and some well-paced and inviting singing". The main B-side was another album track from the UK version of the album, "Why Look for the Key", although with a slightly longer fade that made it about twenty seconds longer than the version on the UK version of ''Dream into Action''. ''Dream into Action'' is the second studio album by British pop musician Howard Jones. It was released in March 1985 and reached No. 2 in the UK Album Charts. The album also reached the top ten in the U.S. The album achieved a gold certification in the UK and platinum status in the US and Canada. The album contains the hit singles " Things Can Only Get Better" (UK No. 6, US No. 5), " Look Mama" (UK No. 10) and "Life in One Day" (UK No. 14, US No. 19).
