African Independence
''African Independence'' is a 2013 feature-length documentary film and the directorial debut of sociologist Tukufu Zuberi, who also hosts the film. The film premiered at the San Diego Black Film Festival in January 2013 and in 2015, Zuberi published a companion book through Rowman & Littlefield. Synopsis The film focuses on the African Independence Movements and the problems confronted by these movements to win independence. The film tells the story through interviews with independence activists and leaders who helped achieve independence for the African people. By focusing on four watershed events-World War Two, the end of colonialism, the Cold War, and the era of African Republics, ''African Independence'' tells the story of African history, past and present. Tukufu Zuberi
Tukufu Zuberi (born April 26, 1959) is an American sociologist, filmmaker, social critic, educator, and writer. Zuberi has appeared in several documentaries on Africa and the African diaspora, including ''Liberia: America's Stepchild'' (2002), and ''500 Years Later'' (2005). He is one of the hosts of the long-running PBS program ''History Detectives''. As founder of his own production company, he produced the film '' African Independence'', which premiered at the San Diego Black Film Festival in January 2013. He is the Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations, professor and chair of the sociology department, and professor of Africana studies at the University of Pennsylvania. San Diego Black Film Festival
The San Diego Black Film Festival is one of the largest black film festivals in the United States. It was founded in 2002 as the Noir Film Festival and takes place annually in San Diego County, California, to recognize African American movies and production. The festival's motto is "Spotlight on African American and African Diaspora Cinema". History The San Diego Black Film Festival, originally known as the Noir Film Festival, began in 2003 in a hotel room in the Gaslamp Quarter. Three films were shown, and approximately 20 people attended. In 2006 the name of the festival was changed to the San Diego Black Film Festival because the organizers realized that there was confusion with "Film Noir".
