Afgar
''Afgar, or the Andalusian Leisure'' is a musical with lyrics by Douglas Furber, music by Charles Cuvillier and a book by Fred Thompson and Worton David. It is based on Cuvillier's 1909 French operetta of the same name, with words by André Barde and Michel Carré. The original West End production opened at the London Pavilion on 17 September 1919 and ran for 300 performances. It featured Marie Burke, Alice Delysia, Strafford Moss, John Humphries, Lupino Lane, Harry Welchman and Leon Morton, and its cast recording was the first original cast recording of a musical at the Pavilion. The Broadway production, directed by Frank Collins, opened on 8 November 1920 at the Central Theatre and ran for 168 performances. It starred Irving Beebee as Don Juan, Jr. and Delysia as Zaydee. Alice Delysia
Alice Henriette Lapize (3 March 1889 – 10 February 1979), better known by her stage name, Alice Delysia and sometimes Elise Delisia, was a French actress and singer who made her career in English musical theatre. After performing in the chorus at the Moulin Rouge and other theatres in Paris from the age of 14, she became a chorus girl in Edwardian musical comedies, briefly on Broadway theatre, Broadway in 1905, then in London for several years and back in Paris in 1912. She got her big break in 1913, when she was offered a leading role in a revue presented by the impresario Charles B. Cochran, C B Cochran. The show was a hit and established Delysia as a star. During World War I, she starred in a string of West End theatre, West End revues and an operetta, all of which consolidated her success. Charles Cuvillier
Charles Cuvillier (24 April 1877 – 14 February 1955) was a French composer of operetta. He won his greatest successes with the operettas ''La reine s'amuse'' (1912, played as ''The Naughty Princess'' in London) and with '' The Lilac Domino'', which became a hit in 1918 in London. Strafford Moss
Frederick Strafford Moss (1 November 1868 – 1941) was a British tenor and actor. He appeared in the Savoy operas of Gilbert and Sullivan from 1897 to 1913, mainly in touring companies of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, following which he had a career in musical theatre on the West End of London, West End stage until 1931. Early years: joining D'Oyly Carte Moss was the son of Ruhamah Moss and civil servant William Burrowes Moss. He made his first appearance with one of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company touring companies from August to December 1897, most likely in the chorus, before taking on the small roles of Leonard Meryll in ''The Yeomen of the Guard'' and Francesco in ''The Gondoliers''. At the Savoy Theatre Moss sang with the chorus in ''The Beauty Stone'' from May to July 1898 and appeared in the leading tenor role of the Defendant in ''Trial by Jury'' in December 1898.
